Due to its large size, Spain has three climate zones. The primary climate is Mediterranean, which is characterised by hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Daylight hours are long, even in winter. You can expect temperatures ranging from 8 to 19 in spring/autumn and up to 35 degrees Celsius in July and August.
The Meseta (central plateau) has a continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters, with the majority of rain falling in spring and autumn, especially in the surrounding mountains.
Although the climate in north-western Spain (Basque Country, Asturias, Cantabria and Galicia) is generally mild, the weather can change very rapidly and you must be prepared for anything (rain, mist, wind and even hail or snow at any time of year).
The Spanish Pyrenees enjoy a better climate than the French Pyrenees, usually dry and sunny during the summer, although during July and August afternoon thunderstorms are common. However, mountain is notoriously unpredictable, so you need to be prepared for all types of weather, even in summer.
Majorca and the Canary Islands are year-round destinations, with hot summers and moderate winters.
Refer to trips or region pages for specific information about climate.
Spain is GMT +1 hour, GMT +2 hours during daylight saving (the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October).
