Romania is a fascinating gem of Eastern Europe, blessed with intriguing history, rich culture and stunning mountain landscapes dotted with wildflowers, traditional villages and medieval castles.
Start out in Bucharest, Romania’s dynamic capital and one of Europe’s largest cities. Here you can explore the green parks, cosmopolitan restaurants and eclectic museums while the colossal architecture of the city is a constant reminder of the Ceausescu era.
To the north is Transylvania, a region cloaked in myths and legends but in reality is a mountainous area with fairytale castles nestled amongst picturesque, unspoilt views.
Experience the legends of Dracula with a walking tour including Bran Castle. Hit the trails and hike the dramatic limestone ridges and gorges of Piatra Craiului for exceptional panoramas. Maybe even spot a bear in the wild (Romania is home to some of Europe’s largest bear populations).
Further north in the Carpathian Mountains, hike among stunning alpine forests, flower-laden meadows and ragged limestone cliffs in the Bucegi Mountains and discover the painted monasteries of Bucovina; east of Bucharest is the Danube Delta, rich in birdlife and ideal for exploring by bike and boat.
Romania’s central position in Europe makes it a culturally diverse melting pot. Perhaps the most interesting people you’ll encounter are the Roma, who have faced many trials and tribulations throughout their nomadic existence. You’ll witness the distinct lifestyles of the locals as you wander through the timeless villages complete with wooden churches, horse-drawn carts and mystic Eastern traditions.
If you’re looking for a destination that will take your breath away, make you think, and reward you with exciting encounters on every turn of the trail, Romania always leaves a lasting impression on its visitors.
