FAQs for Alpine Hiking in Europe

Alpine hiking takes you through some of Europe's most dramatic mountain scenery, but it also comes with its own set of practical questions around fitness, terrain, weather and remote accommodation. These FAQs cover what to expect on a multi-day alpine hiking trip, whether you're travelling self-guided or as part of a guided group.

If you still have something to ask, or simply want the reassurance of a friendly team member, feel free to contact us.

General Questions

What should I expect on a multi-day alpine hiking trip?

Alpine hiking involves sustained days in mountainous terrain, often with significant ascents and descents, uneven or rugged trails and changing weather. Some itineraries also cross high passes or more exposed sections. Check the trip grading and day-by-day itinerary carefully so you understand the level of fitness, experience and preparation required.

How fit do I need to be for an alpine hiking trip?

You need a level of fitness appropriate to your trip's grading and should be comfortable hiking for consecutive days over mountainous terrain. Alpine trips can involve considerable daily elevation gain and loss, so your preparation should include hills, longer hiking days and, where possible, walking on terrain similar to what you will encounter.

What if I am concerned about heights or vertigo?

Some alpine routes may include exposed sections, narrow trails, steep slopes or high mountain passes. If you are uncomfortable with heights or experience vertigo, check the itinerary and grading carefully before booking. The degree of exposure varies considerably between routes, so ask UTracks about the specific trip you are considering.

When should I book my alpine hiking trip?

Mountain hut and refuge accommodation can be limited, so it's best to book at least two months ahead of your planned departure, particularly for popular routes during peak season. Booking early also gives you time to complete the fitness preparation your trip requires. Some departures may still be bookable closer to your travel dates depending on availability, so contact our team to discuss a last-minute booking.

Can I bring my family on an alpine hiking trip?

Alpine hiking trips generally involve more demanding terrain, exposure and remote accommodation than a standard family walking holiday, so suitability depends on the specific itinerary and the age and experience of the children travelling. Check the trip grading and day-by-day itinerary carefully, or speak with our team, before booking an alpine trip for family travel.

I'll be travelling by myself, what are my options?

If you're travelling alone, you can join a small group of international travellers on a guided trip, or travel independently on a self-guided route. A single supplement may apply if you'd like your own room rather than sharing, and a solo traveller supplement may apply on self-guided trips, which are priced on the basis of two people travelling together. You won't pay both on the same booking. Check the individual trip page for the costs that apply.

What does a typical day look like on an alpine hiking trip?

Each day usually starts with breakfast at your accommodation before setting out on the day's hiking. If you're changing accommodation that night, you'll leave your main luggage behind for transfer ahead of you, carrying only what you need for the day, such as water, snacks and warm layers. On a guided trip, your International Mountain Leader sets the pace and leads the route; on a self-guided trip, you follow your own navigation app or route notes at your own pace. You'll arrive at your next accommodation, whether a valley hotel or a mountain hut or refuge, in the afternoon or evening, ready for the day ahead.

What is the accommodation like in remote mountain areas?

Some alpine itineraries stay in mountain huts and refuges, where dormitory-style rooms are the standard and bathroom facilities are generally shared. Facilities and services are simpler than those found in valley hotels. Private room upgrades may be available on some itineraries; check your individual trip information for specific accommodation details and upgrade options.

Will my luggage be transferred between accommodations?

Luggage transfers are included, but arrangements vary by route and conditions. Bags may be transferred by vehicle where road access is available. In more remote mountain areas, pack animals may be used, including mules on some Mont Blanc and Dolomites itineraries, a traditional method of carrying cargo in the mountains, and horses on some Balkan routes. At times you may need to carry your overnight requirements in your day pack, with your main luggage returned at a subsequent overnight destination.

Are there luggage weight limits on alpine trips?

Yes, some alpine trips have stricter luggage allowances, particularly where bags are transported by mules and horses rather than standard vehicles. Allowances differ between itineraries, so check your trip information carefully and pack within the specified limit.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Mountain weather can change quickly. On guided trips, your leader may alter the start time, route or planned hiking day when conditions require it. On self-guided trips, you should monitor weather conditions each morning before setting out and follow the weather and safety information provided for your itinerary.

What if I encounter any issues on my trip?

While unlikely to be necessary, your trip information includes contact details for a support line you can call if you encounter any issues. On a guided trip, your International Mountain Leader is also on hand and experienced in helping resolve problems that arise on the trail.

Can dietary requirements be catered for in mountain huts and refuges?

Dietary requirements can be more difficult to accommodate in remote mountain areas, where huts and refuges may have fixed menus, smaller kitchens and limited supplies. Advise UTracks of your dietary requirements in advance and check your trip information for any destination-specific limitations. More complex dietary requirements may require additional preparation.

What footwear should I wear for alpine hiking?

Good-quality, over ankle hiking boots are mandatory on some alpine trips and strongly recommended on others, depending on the tour and conditions underfoot. Your boots should fit correctly and be well broken in before departure. Trail runners and shoes without ankle support are not ideal for the rugged conditions encountered on alpine trails. Always follow the footwear requirements specified for your trip.

What other equipment should I bring for alpine hiking?

You will receive a detailed, trip-specific gear list once your booking is confirmed. Essential items generally include a 28 to 35 litre day pack with a rain cover, waterproof hooded jacket and overpants, and layers suitable for changing mountain conditions. A silk sleeping bag liner may also be required for mountain hut stays, while trekking poles are useful if you prefer to hike with them. Always follow the gear list provided for your specific trip.

Will I have electricity to charge my phone and other devices?

Electricity can be limited in remote mountain accommodation and access to charging points cannot always be relied upon. This is particularly important on self-guided trips where your phone may be used for navigation. Carrying a suitable power bank is recommended and essential devices should be fully charged before each hiking day.

Will I have mobile phone reception or Wi-Fi in the mountains?

Do not assume you will have continuous mobile reception or internet access while hiking in alpine areas. Coverage can be intermittent or unavailable in remote valleys and mountain accommodation. On self-guided trips, ensure the navigation resources provided for your trip are accessible as instructed before setting out.

What happens if I struggle to complete a hiking day?

On a guided trip, tell your leader as soon as you begin having difficulty. On a self-guided trip, check your trip documentation. Options depend on the route, terrain and local access, and alternative transport may not always be possible, making appropriate grading, fitness and preparation particularly important.

Self-Guided Alpine Trips

How do I navigate on a self-guided alpine hiking trip?

For self-guided trips, you are provided with access to a navigation app customised to your booking, with all trip information delivered electronically. Familiarise yourself with the app and documentation before your first hiking day and ensure your phone is charged and available for navigation while on the trail.

Guided Alpine Trips

What does an International Mountain Leader do?

On trips led by an International Mountain Leader, the leader guides the group through mountain terrain and manages the hiking day, including group pace, timing and decisions affected by trail or weather conditions. The leader's role does not replace the need to arrive appropriately prepared and fit enough for the demands of your itinerary.

What language will the tour be conducted in?

Guided tours are conducted in English, as well as the local language spoken by your guide. Groups may include travellers of different nationalities, including people who have booked through other travel partners. Any additional languages spoken by your guide will vary by departure.

Will I need to keep pace with the group?

Yes. On a guided alpine trip you need to be able to maintain a reasonable pace with the group throughout the hiking day. The leader will manage the group, but sustained climbs, descents and longer days mean you should arrive with the fitness and preparation needed to complete the planned hiking at a group pace.

Will everyone on my guided trip have booked through UTracks?

Not necessarily. Some departures may include travellers who have booked through other travel partners, with everyone travelling as one group on the ground. Where this applies, details of the arrangements for your trip will be provided in your Pre-Departure Information, available through your traveller portal following trip confirmation.

How many other travellers will be on my guided alpine hiking trip?

Group size depends on the specific trip and time of season, but our guided alpine hiking trips generally run with fewer than 20 travellers.

Where do other travellers on my guided alpine hiking trip come from?

Travellers on our European alpine hiking tours come from all over the world, though most come from Australia, New Zealand, North America, the UK and Europe. Your group may include a mix of nationalities and languages, but all guided tours are conducted in English.
