About UTracks
Is UTracks a reputable travel company?
Yes. UTracks is part of the World Expeditions Travel Group and specialises in active holidays, walking and cycling in particular, with itineraries and logistics planned in advance so you spend more of your trip enjoying it than organising it.
What type of trips does UTracks offer?
Walking and cycling are at the heart of UTracks, offered both self-guided and guided. Depending on the destination, that spans long-distance trails, coastal and alpine walks, pilgrimage routes, cycling routes and Bike & Boat journeys. Check each trip page for the exact format and inclusions.
Is UTracks only for experienced walkers and cyclists?
No. UTracks trips range from our rambler trips on routes with manageable daily distances to longer days with sustained climbs or more demanding terrain. Every trip carries a grading so you can check the physical demands before you book.
How self-guided trips work
What does self-guided actually mean?
A self-guided trip gives you the freedom to walk or cycle at your own pace, without the structure of a group or guide, while the key logistics are arranged for you. Depending on the trip, UTracks organises your accommodation, luggage transfers, route information and navigation app, and selected meals. On cycling trips, bike rental may also be included or available as an option. Accommodation is chosen to suit the character of the route and can range from welcoming inns and guesthouses to comfortable 2, 3 and 4-star hotels.
Each day is yours to shape. Start when you like, stop for a coffee, linger over lunch, visit a village or take extra time at a viewpoint. Detailed route information and, on most trips, a navigation app help you stay on track, while local support is available should you need assistance along the way.
It is independent travel without having to organise every detail yourself.
If the trip is self-guided, what does UTracks organise?
UTracks handles the logistics of an independent walking or cycling holiday: commonly hand picked accommodation, route information, navigation and luggage transfers, plus other pre-arranged services depending on the trip. Exact inclusions are listed on each trip page.
How will I find my way?
Navigation varies by trip: some trips use UTracks' own Pathfinder app, while others provide detailed route notes, maps, or a different navigation app. Your trip documentation explains exactly what's provided. It's recommended that you get familiar with it before day one rather than learning the system on the trail.
What is the Pathfinder app?
Pathfinder is UTracks' own GPS navigation app, used on select trips to guide you along each day's route on your phone. Where a trip doesn't use Pathfinder, you're given other route information instead, such as maps, detailed notes or a different app, so check what's provided on the specific trip page before you book.
What happens to my luggage while I walk or cycle?
On most self-guided itineraries, your luggage is transferred between accommodations each day, so you walk or cycle carrying only what you need. Baggage allowances and any exceptions vary by trip. Check the specific trip page and your pre-departure information before you travel.
What happens if I need help on a self-guided trip?
Self-guided doesn't mean unsupported. Your trip documentation gives you local contact details for your itinerary, and how support is structured depends on the destination and trip. You can review this before departure and carry the contact details with you.
Do I have to walk or cycle at a set pace?
No. You choose your own start time, stops and pace each day, within what's practical for daylight hours, transfers and accommodation check-in. That flexibility is one of the main reasons travellers choose a self-guided trip over a guided one.
Can I shorten my walking or cycling days?
Sometimes, but not on every itinerary. On a self-guided trip you control your pace, but the route between booked accommodations and luggage-transfer arrangements may limit how much a day can be shortened. Where a shorter route or local transport is practical, your trip information or local support team can advise. Check before booking if this is important to you.
What happens if I can't complete my walking or cycling day?
Contact the local support team as soon as you know you may not be able to complete the day. Depending on the destination, an alternative such as local transport or a transfer may be possible, but this cannot be guaranteed and will likely involve an additional cost. Your trip information provides the relevant local contact details.
Will I be travelling with other UTracks travellers?
Not as an organised group. Other UTracks travellers may follow the same route or stay at the same accommodation, but you complete each day independently. Guided and Bike & Boat trips work differently. Check the itinerary for the trip format.
How UTracks works with local partners
Does UTracks subcontract its trips to local companies?
While UTracks designs every itinerary and ensures it meets our stringent quality and safety standards, many trips are operated by our trusted network of strategic regional partners. For guided trips, departures are not always exclusive to UTracks travellers. You may be joined by walkers or cyclists who have booked through other travel companies, and group members may come from all over the world. As a result, English may not be the only language spoken during the trip. Our guides are highly experienced in working with multilingual groups and will always provide all key briefings and important information in English, and may also deliver them in other languages to ensure everyone is informed and included. We believe this approach not only upholds our stringent standards but also creates a richer travel experience, combining the expertise of local teams with the opportunity to share the journey with like-minded adventurers from around the globe.
Does UTracks give back to the places I travel through?
Yes, in two ways. Every trip already puts money directly into local guides, crews and small businesses through our partners, and UTracks also contributes ongoing micro-donations to community and conservation projects through the World Expeditions Foundation, a registered not-for-profit run by volunteer directors, where every dollar donated reaches the project with no administration fees taken out.
Wouldn't it be better to book directly with a local operator?
Usually not. Many of our partners do not deal directly with travellers or the itinerary we are offering is exclusive to UTracks. Sometimes a local operator may offer a lower price, but booking with UTracks gives you the benefit of dealing with a travel company in your own market, with local booking support before you travel and someone to advocate for you if an issue needs to be resolved. We work closely with our local partners to shape and refine itineraries, accommodation choices and daily stages, drawing on traveller feedback across our broader network. On selected trips, UTracks also provides additional tools such as our Pathfinder navigation app.
Why doesn't UTracks run every trip with its own staff?
Because good self-guided travel depends on local knowledge. Accommodation changes, luggage needs to move between small towns, bikes need local servicing, and route conditions shift, and a specialist team based in the destination is usually better placed to manage that than someone working remotely.
Why do reviews mention dealing with both UTracks and a local operator?
Because UTracks combines support from your home market with local expertise in the destination. UTracks manages your booking, pre-departure information and overall trip arrangements. Once you are travelling, the local team is often best placed to help with practical matters such as luggage transfers, accommodation, bikes or route-related questions. This means you have access to the people who can resolve issues most quickly on the ground, while UTracks remains involved in your booking and can assist if something needs further follow-up. Your trip information clearly explains who to contact and when.
Accommodation and logistics
What sort of accommodation does UTracks use?
Accommodation varies by destination and trip character, ranging from small, locally run properties to comfortable 3 and 4 star hotels suited to the route. Location and easy access to that day's walking or cycling matter as much as the standard. Check the accommodation type on each trip page.
Why does accommodation vary during the same trip?
Long-distance routes pass through small towns and rural areas, so accommodation options differ from one night to the next. That variety comes with travelling through a region rather than basing yourself in one town. Each itinerary's accommodation section sets out exactly what to expect.
Are meals included?
It depends on the trip. Breakfast is included on most itineraries; lunches and dinners are included on some trips and independent on others. Check the inclusions on the specific trip you're considering.
Are bikes included on cycling trips?
All bike tours include bike hire, usually with a choice between standard bikes and e-bikes (supplements apply). The trip page sets out the available bike options, inclusions and any extra charges.
Cost and value
Why book a self-guided holiday instead of arranging it all myself?
You can plan an independent walking or cycling holiday yourself. The reason to book with UTracks is to skip most of that logistical work while keeping your independence. Access to our itineraries is not always possible through independent arrangement. The route, accommodation, luggage movements, navigation and local arrangements are already organised, so you focus on the trip rather than coordinating each piece.
Can I book the accommodation and services myself for less?
Sometimes, yes. Arranging everything independently may in some cases work out cheaper, but price is only one part of it. A UTracks trip packages the planning that turns separate hotels, routes and luggage transfers into one workable itinerary, with local support built in.
What is included in the trip price?
Inclusions differ by itinerary, so always check the specific trip page. Depending on the trip, the price may cover accommodation, specified meals, luggage transfers, navigation information, bike hire and transfers, with everything included and excluded listed clearly so you know the cost before booking.
What's not included in the price?
Check the specific trip pages for things which are not included. This usually encompasses drinks, laundry, souvenir purchases, meals not specified as included, some entrance fees, extra transfers that may be required, hotel taxes that can only be paid locally and travel insurance.
Are flights included?
No. International flights are separate from the land arrangements. Check the specific trip page for exact inclusions, and speak with our reservations team if you need help working out what else you'll need to arrange.
Choosing the right trip
How fit do I need to be?
The fitness required depends on the trip. Our grading system is designed to help you understand the daily distances, terrain and level of effort involved before you book. Compare the grading with the day-by-day itinerary and prepare for the type of walking or cycling you will actually be doing. Regular activity before departure will make the trip more enjoyable, especially on itineraries with consecutive active days, hills or longer distances. If you are unsure which grade is right for you, speak with our team before booking.
How safe are UTracks trips?
Active travel always involves an element of personal responsibility, and conditions can change with weather, terrain and local circumstances. We provide route information and trip-specific guidance, and on self-guided trips your documentation includes local contact details should you need assistance. Choose a trip that matches your fitness, experience and bike-handling or walking ability, and follow the information provided for your itinerary.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Walking and cycling trips take place in changing weather, so you should be prepared for the conditions expected on your itinerary. If poor weather makes a route unsafe or impractical, follow the advice in your trip information and contact the local support team. Alternative arrangements depend on the specific trip and cannot always be guaranteed.
How do I hire an e-bike?
Where an e-bike is available, you can select it during the booking process and a supplement will usually apply. E-bikes reduce the effort required on hills and longer days, but you still need to be a competent cyclist. They are heavier than standard bikes, can accelerate quickly and require confident handling when braking, cornering, starting and stopping. Check the individual trip page for the bike options available.
Do you have family-friendly trips?
Yes, selected UTracks itineraries are suitable for families, but the right trip depends on the children's ages, cycling or walking experience, daily distances and the services available on that itinerary. Some cycling trips may offer child equipment or alternative bike options. Check the specific trip page and speak with our team so we can help you assess whether a trip suits your family.
Guided trips
What should I expect on a guided trip?
A guided trip combines an active itinerary with the support and knowledge of a local guide and the camaraderie of a small group. Your guide manages the day-to-day flow of the trip and provides local insight along the way, while the key logistics are arranged for you. Group size, equipment, meals and inclusions vary by itinerary, so check the individual trip page and detailed trip notes for the exact arrangements.
Will everyone on a guided trip have booked through UTracks?
Usually but not always. Some guided departures are shared with travellers who have booked through other travel companies, so your group may include people from different countries and English may not be the only language spoken. Key briefings and important information are provided in English. The individual trip notes will explain the format of your chosen departure where relevant.
What equipment is included on a guided or cycling trip?
Equipment varies by itinerary. On cycling trips, bike hire is included, with the available bike type and any e-bike supplement shown on the trip page. Other equipment such as helmets, panniers or route materials may also be provided depending on the trip. Always check the specific inclusions rather than assuming the same equipment applies across the whole UTracks range.
Booking and flexibility
What is the difference between a single supplement and a solo traveller supplement?
A single supplement is the additional cost for having your own room rather than sharing a twin room. A solo traveller supplement may apply on some trips when you are travelling on your own. This reflects additional costs associated with operating the trip for one person, such as luggage transfers and other arrangements. You will not pay both a single supplement and a solo traveller supplement. Depending on the trip, either a single supplement or a solo traveller supplement may apply. Please refer to the individual trip page for details.
Can I upgrade my accommodation?
On selected trips, yes. Where an accommodation upgrade is available it will be shown on the trip page or as a supplement during the booking process. Availability can vary by date and location, so request the upgrade when you book rather than relying on it being available later.
Can I add extra nights or rest days?
Often, yes. Extra nights can commonly be added before or after a trip, and on some itineraries it may also be possible to add a rest day or extend a stay along the route. Because accommodation, luggage transfers and other services may be linked to your itinerary, request any changes when you book so we can confirm what is possible.
Can I organise a trip for my own group?
Yes. If you are travelling with friends, a club or another private group, speak with our team about the options available. Depending on the itinerary and group size, we may be able to arrange a private departure or tailor elements of the trip while retaining the logistics that make the itinerary work.
Can I book for my whole travelling party?
Yes. Travellers can book together or separately, depending on what is most convenient for your group. If members of the same party book separately, make sure the bookings are linked so we know you are travelling together. The booking process will show the traveller information required for the trip.
How far in advance should I book?
There is no single booking window that applies to every UTracks trip. Availability varies by route, season and departure, and accommodation can be limited on popular self-guided itineraries. If your dates are important, booking earlier gives us the best opportunity to confirm the services required for your chosen trip.
When should I book my flights?
Book your flights only after UTracks has confirmed your trip arrangements. A booking request should not be treated as confirmed until you receive confirmation from us. Once confirmed, check the joining and departure details for your specific itinerary before purchasing flights or other non-refundable travel arrangements.
When will I receive my final documents?
Final trip documentation is provided before departure once the arrangements for your trip have been finalised. The timing can vary by itinerary and destination, but this will usually be 3 weeks prior to your trip departure date. If you are departing from home earlier, we may not be able to supply your documents before you leave. If you have questions about the timing for your booking, contact the UTracks team handling your trip.
Can I combine two or more trips?
UTracks trips can be combined where the dates, start and end points, transport connections and availability work together. Our team can help you assess the practical connection between itineraries and whether an extra night is advisable between them. Each trip remains subject to its own availability and booking arrangements.
Can I change my dates or cancel my booking?
Changes and cancellations are subject to the booking terms and conditions that apply to your booking and may also depend on whether accommodation and other services have already been confirmed. Please review the current UTracks terms and conditions before booking, and contact our team if you need to make a change.
How do I make a booking?
You can book a UTracks trip through the booking options shown on our website or contact our team for assistance. Once we receive your booking request, we will confirm availability and provide the information you need to prepare for your trip. A booking request should not be treated as confirmed until you receive confirmation from UTracks. For self guided trips, it can take a week or more to confirm your booking.
Food and practical information
What about meals and dietary requirements?
Meal inclusions vary by trip, with breakfast included on most itineraries and selected lunches or dinners included on others. The trip page lists exactly which meals are included. Where possible, dietary requirements can often be accommodated if we know about them in advance, although options may be more limited in small villages, mountain huts or remote areas.
Where can I find more detailed information about my trip?
Each trip page includes the itinerary, grading, inclusions, accommodation information and other practical details, with detailed trip notes available for many itineraries. You will also find additional trip-specific FAQs on individual trip pages. If you still have questions, our team can help you work through the details before you book.
