Explore some of Romania's most stunning mountain landscapes and soak up the unique culture of Transylvania on this inspiring self guided walk. Piatra Craiului meaning royal stone, is a dramatic limestone ridge which rises sharply from the forests and plains below, offering one of the best ridge walks in Europe. En route to the Bucegi Mountains, explore the gorges and ridgetops of Piatra Craiului to experience exceptional views of the region. The Bucegi mountains are home to a diverse range of landscapes from pine and beech forests to flower laden meadows and high limestone cliffs. It is also where you can find Bran Castle, connected through folklore to the fictitious character, Dracula. Whilst the legends of Transylvania are an enticing reason to visit this region, the walking opportunities and the friendly atmosphere created by your hosts in the rural pensions guarantee this will be a unique and diverse adventure.

Day 2
Walk to Bran Castle, home to the origin of the character known as 'Dracula' (4hrs)
Today you will walk along a small ridge leading to Bran Castle, at the foot of the Bucegi mountains. The castle was built as a gift from Ludovic d'Anjou in the 14th century to the inhabitants of the region and had a defensive role against the migratory peoples. Later it protected Transylvania from the Ottoman invasions. The castle was also associated with the prince Vlad Tepes of Walachia, upon whom it is widely thought the fictional character 'Dracula' was based. Entry into the castle is optional (it is busy in peak season and on weekends, we suggest buying tickets online). In the late afternoon transfer back to your guesthouse in Magura. If you're not interested in visiting the castle, or simply prefer walking more, returning on foot is possible: you can take a pleasant wooden trail, part of the Via Transilvanica long distance trail that crosses Romania from North-East to South-West. Walking: around 4hrs, 10km/6.25mi, +450m/1476ft, -700m/2296ft Optional extension: 9km/5.6mi, +650m/2132ft, -400m/1312ft

Day 3
Continue on foot through Piatra Craiului mountains and rural villages (5-6hrs)
The walk continues at the base of the Piatra Craiului Mountains. It's an interesting contrast to the landscape of the previous day, as you traverse pastures, sheepfolds and woods. Scattered villages which seem unchanged for centuries dot the landscape, while the surrounding mountains are a constant companion. End the day in the traditional mountain village of Ciocanu where the accommodation is a cosy lodge (with possible shared bathroom). The day offers two walking variants, either a smoother walk through Curmatura Groapelor or a more adventurous one (not recommended in poor weather) that features two significantly steep sections: one descent and one ascent. Walking: around 14.5km/9mi, +550m/1805ft, -420m/1378ft. Long version: around 5.5hrs, 16km/10mi, +700m/2297ft, -550m/1805ft.
Day 4
Walk to Bucegi's mountains through picture postcard landscapes (5hrs)
This morning you leave the Piatra Craiului mountains and walk to Bucegi's mountains. It's an easy walk with “picture postcard” landscapes to a traditional Romanian mountain village with small and ancient houses, at the foot of the Bucegi mountains. The inhabitants are livestock breeders and the village has a long tradition in cheese making. Overnight in Moeciu de Sus. Walking: 15km/9.4mi, +550m/1805ft, -700m/2296ft
Day 5
Ascend the Bucegi Mountains with stunning views (6hrs or 4.5hrs)
A strenuous day as you ascend trails into the Bucegi mountains. The route starts with a gentle, steady climb up to the open alpine meadows of Gutanu, alongside the sheer rock walls of the Bucegi Ridge. Keep your camera handy—you'll enjoy incredible views stretching right across to the rugged limestone crest of Piatra Craiului. Overnight in a local guesthouse in Moeciu de Sus. Full walking option: around 6hrs, 15km/9.4mi, +750m/2460ft, -850m/2789ft Shorter option: around 4hrs, 9km/5.6mi, +400m/1312ft, -550m/1804ft
Day 6
Transfer to Brasov, explore at leisure, overnight
After breakfast, a short transfer (1hr) takes you to Brasov. Drop your luggage at the hotel and the remainder of the day is free to explore. It's one of the seven cities founded by the Saxons in the 12th century when they were invited to Transylvania to guard the mountain passes and has a vibrant mix of Saxon, Hungarian, and Romanian history. Enjoy exploring its colourful medieval streets, cosy cafés, and red-roofed houses tucked safely within the old city walls. Wander through Council Square, visit the famous Gothic Black Church, or snap photos at the White and Black Towers. If you'd like more trail time, walk through the woods up to Tâmpa Hill (at 960m/3149ft) for sweeping views over the city—or simply ride the cable car to the top. Stay overnight in a central, cosy hotel. Optional walk from 1 to 3 hrs, +/-300m. There is also the opportunity to visit the Libearty Bear Sanctuary outside Brasov. Ask for details, must prebook. Extra nights in Brasov can be booked on request.

Day 7
Train to Bucharest, trip concludes
Make your own way to Brasov station to take the train to Bucharest, where the trip concludes. If you take eg the 9.15am train you'll arrive in Bucharest at approx. 11.45am. Do not book a flight departing until at least 3hrs after your arrival at Bucharest North station to allow time to reach the airport and check-in. We can assist with a transfer to the airport on request - supplement applies. We can also assist with booking extra nights in Bucharest on request, please ask our team.
