Watch: Camino Primitivo

The Camino Primitivo is thought to have been the very first pilgrimage route to Santiago, hence it is also known as the Original Way.

On hearing that the bones of the Apostle James were miraculously unearthed in Santiago, King Alphonse II of the Asturias made the treacherous journey in the 9th century from Oviedo via Lugo to Santiago and eventually was accredited with confirming the relics.

The path offers a quieter trail through beautiful natural settings and gorgeous rural farmland, passing through the authentically friendly villages of northern Spain.

You can experience the Full Camino Primitivo on an 18-day self-guided walk, or take in the Highlights over 9 days.

We booked the Camino Primitivo self-guided tour and it was amazing! Everything was so well-organised. Our luggage was transferred from stop to stop along the way, transfers were easy and the hotels were all great. We could not fault a single thing and are really happy that we chose them and the self-guided option as it was great to be able to control our pace along the route. L. Clarke.
