Blog home / World Tapas Day: Food, Glorious Food!
Seven trips to indulge in one of Spain’s very best culinary traditions, plus a new version of El Camino especially for food lovers!
To celebrate World Tapas Day this Thursday (16th June), we have selected below some of our top active holidays in Spain where tapas is of course plenty available…
BASQUE COUNTRY | San Sebastian to Bilbao - Camino Norte
A week-long walk from the seaside resort of San Sebastian, one of the gastronomic hotspots of the world, to the bustling city of Bilbao, home to the iconic Guggenheim Museum. Relax with a glass of ‘txakoli’, the local sparkling wine, at the fishing village of Getaria, and explore Guernica, scene of the 1937 aerial bombing by the Nazis and the inspiration behind Pablo Picasso’s famous painting on this active holiday in Spain.
EL CAMINO | Food Lover’s Spanish Camino
A new approach to the classic pilgrimage route, which combines a passion for good food with the trail’s incredible history. Walk the best sections of the trail whilst sampling the local cuisine, from the heart of the Basque modern cuisine to the small villages on the Camino. The trip includes a mix of special gourmet dinners, regional cuisine and home cooking, as well as two wine tasting sessions.
RIOJA | Cycle the Rioja
Bordered by mountains with the Ebro River running through the middle, the Rioja region has a micro-climate perfect for viticulture. Starting at Laguardia (its unofficial capital with 320 wine cellars), you will sample delicious regional produce, explore picturesque villages and small castles and view religious art in monasteries and churches – all while you're actively cycling Spain's quiet country roads.
CATALONIA | Catalonia Cycling
There’s more to Catalonia than Barcelona: the region has long been known for its colourful past, stunning coastline and rolling countryside. The pace is relaxed, following flat to gently rolling terrain, from the green countryside past fields of sunflowers and forests of pines into an ancient land inhabited by Iberians in pre-Roman times and once besieged by pirates.
THE NORTHERN COAST: ASTURIAS & CANTABRIA | High Trails of the Picos de Europa
Rising from the Ocean, this is one of the most striking mountain ranges in Europe: its jagged limestone peaks rise to 2,600m and contrast sharply with the lush valleys dotted with small hamlets far below. These mountains along the northern coast of Spain are thought to have been the first sight of the continent for ships arriving from the Americas, which has given them the name Picos de Europa (Peaks of Europe). They are the backdrop for one of our best active holidays in Spain.
