Watch: Exploring the Lycian Way in Turkey

Get off the beaten track and explore Turkey's first long-distance walking trail: the Lycian Way. It has everything you'd want in a fantastic walking holiday: fascinating culture, delicious food, welcoming locals, and splendid views of mountains and beaches at every turn of the trail.

Discover more about the Lycian Way by watching a short film of some friends hiking the trail and learning about the different guided and self-guided hiking trips, and cycling holidays, on offer.

About the Lycian Way

Between Fethiye and Antalya along Southern Turkey's Tekke Peninsula, or Lycia as it is historically known, is one of the country's first waymarked trails, the 509km Lycian Way. This mountainous route encompasses spectacular coastal views, archaeological treasures dating back to the 8th century BCE and interesting villages with their unique Lycian flavour.

While walking the Lycian Way, you'll discover sections of the route with well-preserved Greek and Roman cities, a Lycian necropolis lost in vegetation and the remains of the immersed city of Kekova. You'll also traverse rugged mountain trails, meet the gracious local people, sample culinary specialties and swim in the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Watch a hiking trip along the Lycian Way

In the below video you can watch Mustafa and some friends hike the Lycian Way. They encounter amazing sea views and gorgeous pine-covered mountains, and have a wonderful time. Please note that they are walking the trail independently, so are carrying their packs and camping along the route, both of which do not happen on a UTracks trip.

How to explore the Lycian Way

There are three ways to walk the Lycian Way and two ways to cycle the Lycian Way with UTracks.

Lycian Way Walk with a Local Guide

"This was my first UTracks trip and I am 71 years old. Our guide, Tuna, was very good; he taught me how to trek and I did not fall again; Tuna is a trained, licensed, guide, knowledgeable re history, both ancient and modern, and geography.

I enjoyed all the accommodations which were small and local, especially the pension in Adrasan near the Chimerae. Food was wonderful, all local, traditional and lots of it. Our fellow trekkers were very congenial. To sum up, I got to see Turkey, with local Turkish people, not tourists. And great value for my money. Thanks a lot."

Lycian Way Coastal Cycle: Fethiye to Adrasan

As you cycle, you can appreciate the legacies of the Lycians who 2000 years ago settled between Fethiye and Antalya. Time out in the coastal towns of Kas and Andrasan to relax at the beach and absorb this unique pocket of the coast ensures a perfect balance between activity, sightseeing and resting.

Europe Food: Dishes to Dine For

Europe Food: Dishes To Dine For

From humble home-made regional delights to sumptuous fine dining in Michelin star restaurants, the variety, choice of meals, and flavours available on a European jaunt is a major factor in travelling!

Below are some of our favourite flavours that we love to seek out, whether we're at home or abroad.

1. Cassoulet, France

The fortified town of Carcassone is a self-proclaimed capital of this popular slow-cooked dish, one of the oldest specialties in France. While it’s available in cans across France, there’s simply no comparison with the mixture of meats such as pork, goose or even duck, and white beans when prepared in a traditional earthenware pot by someone who knows what they’re doing. Visit on our Canal du Midi Cycle tour.

2. Cherries, Slovenia

Centuries ago, Europe’s ruling elite as far away as Vienna, St Petersburg and Prague developed a taste for Slovenia’s famous little fruit. Today, the simple cherry still entices, with visitors across the continent converging on the countless Cherry Festivals held across the country throughout June. Try one for yourself whilst on one of our active Slovenian holidays.

3. Gozleme & Sage Tea, Turkey

Being greeted by gozleme, a type of pancake cross with flatbread filled with spinach and cheese, is an honour you’ll want to be bestowed on you. In the markets, gozleme varieties include a mixture of minced lamb, potato, white cheese, parsley, and chilli – or for the sweet tooths, try the honey or chocolate with nuts variety. To complete the experience, wash it down with sage tea. Taste it on one of our active tours in Turkey.

4. Meatballs and Lingon Berry Jam, Sweden

The Lingon Berry is a Scandinavian favourite. Its abundance in the local forests means it’s also plentiful in local restaurants. Splash it over herring, pancakes, mashed potatoes or try the countries favourite use for it, meatballs and Lingon Berry. If you’re an adventurous eater you may also want to try some of Sweden’s other favourites on their own, bleak roe (“löjrom”) or roast elk! Sample them during one of our tours in Sweden.

5. White truffles, Italy

If you’re a wannabe trifolau, join the likes of Sophia Lauren and Alfred Hitchcock and head to the Piedmont town of Alba to try Italy’s most famous – and pungent – fungi. The local truffles are legendary, as the International White Truffle Fair, which has existed since 1929, will lay testament to. Held in October to November, it’s a chance to try the local delicacy as well as watch the many medieval games held within the region. Try a truffle in Piedmont during one of our tours.

6. French Cuisine, France

Yes, the entire country of France gets its own position in our top ten European food list! This is because we don't know where to start: croissants, duck l'orange, boeuf Bourguignon, crepes, mussels, etc. There's a reason French cuisine is world famous.

One of the best ways to eat your way around France is on the Food Lovers French Way of St James, which is a 12 days guided cycle accompanied by Australian author, Mary Moody. Explore historic towns, eat lunch at a 100-year-old family restaurant, go truffle hunting, visit the local markets, indulge in wine tasting and fine dining experiences. Food Lover's French Way of St. James

7. Seafood, Greece.

After spending your days frolicking in the Aegean, Ionian, or Mediterranean seas around Greece, surely there's only one thing on your mind: tucking into a sumptuous meal of freshly caught seafood. Whether it's shrimp saganaki, Greek lobster pasta, pan-fried sardines or humungous seared octopus, the seafood in Greece is bound to hit the spot.

8. Burek, the Balkans (Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia).

There's an art to crafting burek, which is a flaky pastry filled with meat, spinach or cottage cheese. The countries that make up the Balkans will typically argue over who makes it the best (shh, but we think it's the Bosnians!). Whatever you do, just don't call it a sausage roll.

This bakery is a shrine to the joy of burek : SBS Food

9. Pretzels, Germany and Austria.

Although the humble pretzel comes in various forms around the world, you have to try it in its original incarnation in Germany or Austria. Crunchy yet soft, with chunks of salt, it's the perfect accompaniment to that other Germanic staple: drinking beer. Proust!

Austrian pretzels | Lilly Donkers

10. Churros, Spain.

This is one of those delicious moments of culture shock: in Spain, it's perfectly fine to dip fried and sugared doughnut sticks into melted chocolate for breakfast. When in Rome...

5 Things You Should Know About the Balkans

An active holiday is the best way to immerse yourself in the unique landscapes of the Balkans in southeast Europe. From the postcard-perfect villages of Croatia to the forest-covered mountains of Bulgaria, there’s no shortage of sights and natural wonders for the active traveller to explore.

Trekking to Musala peak

1. There are varying definitions of the Balkans region

The list of countries included in the Balkans region changes depending on whether you are talking about geography (countries that are in the Balkan Peninsula) or taking into consideration historical and cultural factors. The Balkans are usually said to include Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, BulgariaCroatia, mainland GreeceMacedoniaSerbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, part of Turkey and Slovenia. Each of these countries offers something unique to active travellers, and we are proud to offer over 40 boat-based, cycling and walking holidays in the region.

2. Balkan is Turkish for "mountains"

The Balkans are covered in magnificent and rugged mountain ranges that are a natural paradise for hikers. The five main ranges are:

• the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina in Bulgarian), which run from the Black Sea coast in Bulgaria to the Serbian border;
• the Rhodope Mountains in southern Bulgaria and northern Greece;
• the Dinaric Alps on the Adriatic coastline;
• the Pindus Mountains, which span from southern Albania to Northern Greece and the Albanian Alps; and
• the Šar Mountains, which extend from Kosovo and the northwest of North Macedonia to northeastern Albania.

To the west is the Adriatic Sea, to the south lies the Mediterranean Sea (which includes the Ionian and Aegean seas) and the Marmara Sea, and to the east you’ll find the Black Sea. Extend your Balkans walking holiday and have a well-deserved rest on one of its beautiful stretches of coastline, or combine it with one of our popular Bike & Sail trips in Turkey or Croatia.

4. The Balkans is home to some of the oldest cities in the world

Crossing Corsica:
For sheer spectacular, diverse and outstanding beauty, look no further. This rewarding trek from the heart of Corsica to the stunning west coast, with its vibrant red cliffs at the Calanques of Piana, offers some of the best – if not the best - hiking in Europe.

TOP FOR FOODIES

Piedmont: Land of Barolo and Barbera:
Italy’s unofficial food capital is home to some of the country’s most prestigious wines, a prized white truffle, tasty cheeses and mouth-watering cuisine. Combine this with splendid villages, castles and feudal towers and you have one amazing culinary walking journey.

Food Lovers series of trips:
Wine, dine, walk and talk with like minded souls in the pilgrimage trails of Italy’s Via Francigena, Spain’s Camino de Santiago or France's the French Way of St James. Be treated to Michelin starred restaurants, impressive hiking trails, rich history and time in some of Europe’s most amazing cities.

Normandy on Foot:
Perhaps the best example of ‘paddock to plate’ cuisine in France. Enjoy internationally renowned cheeses, first class seafood, exquisite ciders and calvados as well as classic crepes and pastries. Luckily, there are equally enticing walks every day to ensure the waistline doesn’t suffer!

Turkey Walk & SailOur Turkey Walk & Sail is one of the best ways to experience the coast

14 Top Walking & Cycling Tours as chosen by the Travel Experts

Paris to London cycle groupLondon to Paris by bike, a classic cycling itinerary

When you have over 450 trips to choose from how on earth do you filter out the very best? Ask those who know our walking & cycling holidays the best.

Sue Badyari, CEO World Expeditions Travel Group Grand Combin Traverse: Having completed the Mont Blanc Classic and The Walkers Haute route, I’m pining for more alpine scenery. Our French guides on both of those treks ranked the Grand Combin Traverse as the stellar trek in the Swiss and Italian Alps – so that’s next on my list. Crossing the historic St Bernard Pass (2450m) will no doubt be a great highlight of the walk as well as the tiny hamlets we’ll meander through during the trek.

Encounter smaller and remote villages on the Grand Combin Traverse

Cycle Prague to Vienna: This trip really highlights the advantages of cycling tours in Europe. There are not many places in the world where you can link two iconic cities together by bike in a week. Thanks to the fantastic Greenways Trail this trip serves up plenty of history as well as good food and wine - which makes this trip very appealing indeed!

Kate Baker, UTracks General Manager Crossing Corsica Corsica is always a great holiday destination in Europe. Everyone I have met in my work travels in Europe recently are either going or planning to go to Corsica this year. Crossing the island of foot, swimming in natural water holes, having a taste of the GR20 (the toughest walk in Europe) and seeing the wonderful rock formations of Calanques de Piana is very appealing. With the sea and mountains so close to each other it is the perfect active destination.

Catalonia's quiet roads are ideal for cycling with the family | Kate Baker

Catalonia by Bike for Families – With a couple of keen cyclists in tow, exploring the Spanish Catalan area at handlebar level is a firm family favourite. Spending time at the beach, visiting Figueras and the world renowned Dali Museum, incredible local cuisine, quaint small villages and comfortable farmhouse accommodation and you have an ideal active family holiday.

Jaclyn Lofts, National Sales Manager London to Paris by Bike: I’m all about taking the slower, more active path on my travels so the idea of cycling between two of Europe’s most enigmatic cities is just too good to pass. There’s a wealth of sites, history and countryside to discover on both sides of the English Channel and it’s unlikely you’ll ever get to experience them unless you get on your bike and pedal through it.

Philip Wyndham, General Manager at Adventure South. The Meridian Way: Heart of the Pyrenees My dream trip! This fascinating trip follows the Meridian Way through the International Greenwich Meridian. In France there is plenty of fine food, great wine and eye popping scenery.

Turkey Walk and Sail: Since I have a young family the more likely option is something more suitable for them, and Turkey Walk and Sail is an option which will keep the whole family entertained. Cruising the historic filled coastline of Turkey by a comfortable yet traditionally built Gullet boat, enjoying hearty Turkish food, swimming the azure Mediterranean and exploring quiet villages, ancient ruins or untouched coastline is a far cry from most people’s experience in Turkey.

Brad Atwal, Marketing Director. Amalfi Explorer – Every time I see a stunning coastline picture of Italy it’s either the Cinque Terre or the Amalfi Coast. The diversity of this trip is what really appeals; from discovering the ruins of Pompeii, climbing to the crater of Mt Vesuvius, exploring the famous Amalfi coastline by foot or taking a dip in the Mediterranean waters – this trip has it all.

The gorgeous Amalfi coast

Croatia Family Adventure – Multi activity not only appeals to me, I also know it will keep the kids occupied! The idea of exploring the magical southern Dalmatian islands by foot, bike or even raft sounds like heaven. The itinerary is also nicely balanced with visits to the picturesque ports where I can delve into the history and treat the kids to an ice cream at the same time.

Scott Kirchner, Graphic Designer For me, it has to be the Laugavegur Tail to Skogar in Iceland as well as The Fjordland – Norway trips. My long term love affair with Scandinavian landscapes began well before the Walter Mitty generated frenzy for the region. Even though our trips run in the summer, I prefer destinations where the overall cooler climates produce remarkable natural settings of powerful beauty.

Discover the truly unique landscapes of Iceland on a walking holiday

Our walking itineraries to both Norway and Iceland seem more adventurous and off the beaten path. In fact I find Iceland is so ‘off the radar’ and remote for most people that this itself sparks my fascination. Of course, being of an artistic inclination the fact that it is the home of Bjork is just another reason to want to go!

Efti Poulos, Reservations Consultant Hungarian Rhapsody: This trip is a perennial favourite and I can easily see why. For me, getting off the larger river cruises and cycling along the Danube is the only way to really soak in the sites and atmosphere of this famous river. To combine it with a chance to explore the cities of Vienna and see Budapest just caps off an already well rounded itinerary.

Bratislava Castle | Lilly Donkers

Taste of Burgundy: I did the Highlights of Holland by Barge last year and now I’m hooked on the idea of barge/boat based active adventures! Unpacking just once and having the option to switch cycling for sightseeing is a real luxury on active trips. Burgundy’s focus on great food and good wine just adds to the irresistible temptation to explore this amazing part of France.
