What Is The New UK Travel Permit (ETA) and Do I Need It?

What Is The New UK Travel Permit (ETA) and Do I Need It?

If you’re visiting the United Kingdom for a walking or cycling holiday, make sure you’re prepared for the UK’s new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system. It has taken effect from 8 January 2025. Here’s a quick guide to help you sort it out.

What Is the UK ETA?

The ETA is a digital travel permit for visitors to the UK from visa-exempt countries like the US, Canada, Australia and EU countries. It’s linked to your passport and lets you visit for up to 6 months for tourism, business, or family visits. The authorisation is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires – whichever comes first.

The fully online application links the ETA to the applicant’s passport, enabling seamless entry by presenting the passport at UK border points.

Do You Need an ETA to Enter the UK?

Most travellers from visa-free countries will need an ETA, including holidaymakers. However, Irish citizens and UK residents don’t need one.

The ETA is being introduced in phases, starting in November 2023 with Qatar, followed by several Gulf countries in February 2024. On 27 November 2024, the programme expanded to 49 additional non-European countries, with applications open for travel starting January 8, 2025 - this included Australia and the United States. The next phase begins on 2 April 2025, requiring nationals from 34 European countries to have an ETA, with applications opening on 5 March 2025.

How Do You Apply for an ETA?

It’s simple:
1. Apply online or via the UK ETA app.
2. Have your passport, email address, and payment method ready.
3. Pay the £10 fee per person.

Approval usually takes minutes, but the UK government states it takes 3 days. It’s wise to apply at least a week before your trip in case of delays. Once approved, your ETA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires.

Top Tips for a Smooth Trip in the UK

Check your passport is valid for the entire stay.

Save a copy of your ETA confirmation, either printed or on your phone, for travel.

Apply as soon as your plans are firm to avoid last-minute stress.

The UK ETA is designed to make entering Britain quicker and easier for eligible travellers. For full details or to apply, visit the official UK government website.

Avoid websites that purport to be a legitimate site. Only use the official UK government site: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta

Taking a walking trip on the Channel Islands or Isle of Man?

Visitors do not need a UK ETA to travel to certain British Isles, including the Isle of Man, Jersey, or Guernsey (the Channel Islands), provided they are travelling directly to these locations from outside the UK. These areas have their own immigration rules and are not part of the UK ETA scheme.

However, if you're travelling to these islands via the UK, then UK immigration requirements, including the ETA, apply for the UK portion of your journey. For example:

If you're flying to London and then taking a connecting flight or ferry to Jersey, you'll need an ETA to enter the UK.
If you're travelling directly to Jersey from outside the UK (e.g., from France), you won’t need a UK ETA.

Always check the specific entry requirements for the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands before travelling. They are self-governing territories and may have their own travel rules.

1. Camino Portuguese

The Camino Portuguese route is beautiful and packed with history, taking you through World Heritage-listed towns, coastal boardwalks, vibrant cities, and rural regions that you may otherwise never experience on a tour of Portugal.

UTracks provided the perfect way for my husband and I to walk a lovely part of the Portuguese Camino from Porto to Tui just for a week.

The Camino isn’t a luxury vacation, it has a more humble history, and in the past we walked independently, staying in albergues in Spain, with no set daily itinerary on our way to Santiago de Compostela. This time we wanted to walk just a portion of the Portuguese road, with support to do the groundwork and make our reservations for us.

The inns and homes chosen to stay in all had charm and convenience and were, without exception, clean and run by friendly people. The route through Northern Portugal is beautiful, and the chosen itinerary alternated between challenging and easy days in order to let us enjoy the charming towns along the way.

Well done, and thanks for the good memories!

23. Loire Valley Cycle

A picture perfect scene in front of the Chateau de Cheverny in France | Merilyn O'Kane

"My partner and I are not cyclists. Previously we managed a 2-day bike ride in Australia, so while not complete novices, we are beginner riders.

So, how best to see the Loire Valley in France by bike given this constraint?

Answer: choose a UTracks introductory level,  5-day self guided trip (the Loire Valley Castles Cycle), based each night in the same cute 3-star hotel in the village of Chitenay, paying a little more for an E-bike, and choosing day trips with a length of ride that suited our skill level. We loved it." Read more of Merilyn's Traveller Tale.

21. Best of the Spanish Camino Guided Walk

Explore the iconic Camino trail

"The Best of the Camino was a fabulous experience for us. Our guide, Juan and driver, Santiago were fabulous. This was a second UTracks hike for us in the same vacation. It was such a relief on this trip to have a knowledgeable guide and competent driver who cared about you and fostered a connected sense within the group. This was not our previous experience, as not all guides are like this. The Best of the Camino combines day walks between 15-22km, bus movement across the more ‘boring’ parts of the Camino, great hotel accommodation and meals. I would highly recommend this experience."

20. Scotland's Coast to Coast Walk & Barge

"The crew (skipper, bosan, guide, cook) were all professional and fun and ensured all the guests were safe, enjoying themselves and extremely well fed. Each evening the following days barge trip was outlined as were the walking options. As the barge had to negotiate many locks there were many hop on/hop off points for those not wanting to walk the entire Great Glen.

The scenery both from the barge and the well maintained walking tracks was so spectacular that the light rain each day of our trip seemed insignificant. The facilities on the barge were very comfortable and it was fun having meals all together around one large table. The cabins were comfortable and the showers functioned exceptionally well with good pressure and warmth."

19. Alsace by Bike

Exploring the Alsatian Wine Route in France

"What a hidden gem the Alsace region is. Loved the whole trip. Even though reasonably fit , would recommend electric bikes for the few hills and because the weather was hot.

Cycling through medieval villages ,endless vineyards, next to canals and stunning countryside. Enjoying the traditional cuisine, high quality wines and the culture which seems to be unique, even within France. Accommodation pleasant, a few had no air conditioning which was only a problem when temperatures high. Would definitely do another cycling trip, although it would be hard to match the fun we had on this one!"

18. Via Ferrata Guided Hike

Exploring the Via Ferrata trail in Italy | Ramzi Badran

"The Via Ferrata Guided Walk was the most epic adventure ever for us wanna be rock climbers! Our group ranged in age from 33 to 62.

The Dolomites are spectacular, and clinging to the side of the mountains on the Via Ferrata in these mountains is a surreal experience. We loved the history in this region with the WW1 relics, the tunnels, barracks, and caves that we traveled through. The first day we were a bit in shock at what we had signed up for, but every day got better even as the Via Ferrata's became slightly more difficult." Read more of Nancy's Traveller Tale here.

Cycling the back roads of Provence | Deborah Brinkhoff & Lara Hilton Cycling the back roads of Provence | Deborah Brinkhoff & Lara Hilton Cycling the back roads of Provence | Deborah Brinkhoff & Lara Hilton

"We thoroughly enjoyed our bike riding trip! We opted for e-bikes which was great for us given that we weren't both regular bike riders. The itinerary of each day was very flexible, giving you the chance to have a late or early start with still plenty of time in the day to enjoy the village for your overnight stay. We often opted for an early start, arriving around lunchtime at our destination.

We particularly loved the two-night stay (with a rest day) at Saint Remy de Provence. It gave us more time for some sight seeing and enjoying the bigger village. The GPS navigation was also super easy to follow and as English-speakers, we didn't find any issues making our way around. We would highly recommend this experience to others looking to 'get off the beaten track' and explore some hidden gems in the Provence region."

Old street of Domme village in Dordogne department, France

"This was a great week spent with two friends. It was a particular treat that 5 dinners were included in the holiday itinerary. The places we stayed were chosen for their restaurants and they were all really good. The weather did not always cooperate (we were there in early September) but the good food and friendliness of the places we stayed and the quirkiness of the villages we passed through more than made up for it."

9. Blue Danube Cycle in Comfort

"The Blue Danube cycle path is the most beautiful I could ever imagine. The paved path is an easy ride, almost all along the river. When it veers away, it is through quaint towns/villages, country farms, orchards & vineyards or trees areas. The accommodations and meals are great. Luggage delivery is seamless. I highly recommend this tour with UTracks!"

8. Provence by Bike & Boat

Happy travellers on the Provence by Bike & Barge | Scott Wilson

"We had a great time on the Bike and Barge tour travelling from Avignon to Aigues-Mortes. All the staff on the “Caprice” were fantastic and our tour leader Micky took good care of us. The bike rides were great fun, travelling through beautiful countryside, with interesting stops along the way, and the e-bikes made it fairly easy. The food was outstanding!

We would highly recommend this trip for people who like to get out for some active travel in places a bit off the beaten track, who like food and wine, and who enjoy sharing the experience with a small group of like-minded people."

6. Mont Blanc Guided Hike

"The Tour de Mont Blanc was a truly unforgettable trek! The breathtaking scenery was a constant source of awe—majestic mountain peaks and stunning glacial valleys surrounded us, making every step feel like a journey through a postcard-perfect landscape.

Our guide, Elodie, was the heart of this adventure. Her expertise and skill in navigating the trails were impressive, but what truly set her apart was her ability to connect with each member of our group. Elodie shared her extensive knowledge of the region’s geology and geography, and her adept skill in wrangling a particularly stubborn mule added a delightful touch of humour to our days. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and it made every hike feel like a new adventure. Plus, her commitment to safety ensured that we all felt secure while exploring this alpine terrain.

One of the highlights of the trip was the amazing picnic lunches Elodie prepared, featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Enjoying these delicious spreads amidst such incredible scenery transformed our breaks into memorable feasts. Overall, this trip was a perfect blend of adventure, education, and culinary delight, all expertly guided by Elodie. I can’t recommend this experience highly enough for anyone seeking an epic adventure.

"The Mt Blanc 'smell the roses walk' is a beautiful walk. There are some steep climbs, but our guide always set a pace that everyone could do. The food is authentic and incredible views and scenery."

Desrae & Trish Cycle the Camino Portuguese

Like the terrain under them, Desrae and Trish encountered some highs and lows as they cycled along the Camino Portuguese trail. All in all, it was an unforgettable experience for the both of them, with one of the highlights being reaching their final destination in Santiago de Compostela.

Read on to hear about their travel tales exploring Portugal and Spain by bike.

A CYCLING ADVENTURE!

Self-guiding the Camino by bike from Porto in Portugal to Santiago de Compostela in Spain was a challenging but amazing biking experience.

Cycling the Camino Portuguese has got to be a bucket list adventure for a bike rider. The variations in landscape and terrain certainly makes for an exciting cycle.

Ready to cycle the Camino Portuguese | Desrae Cameron

You take in breathtaking views of the rugged Portuguese coastline and fabulous surfing beaches and then crossing over to Spain by boat you begin riding the forests and trails of the original French/Spanish Camino.

Highlights of the Camino Portuguese by bike | Desrae Cameron

Here are some highlights:

SCARIEST MOMENT: Riding a muddy, partially flooded, potholed trail in the rain through a very black, unlit forest after dark on our first day for many kilometres hoping our accommodation was at the end of it.

Gutters along the Camino Portuguese | Desrae Cameron Highlights of the Camino Portuguese by bike | Desrae Cameron Pebbly beach in Portugal | Desrae Cameron
CHALLENGING MOMENTS: Pushing heavy bikes up over rocks and boulders on long 15% slopes. Pushing heavy bikes through fine sand, exhausting! Navigating through Portugal and no WiFi roaming for maps in Spain. UTracks’ guiding notes are great but not always considered given the different terrains on the trails.

Cycling into Pontevedra | Desrae Cameron

FUNNIEST MOMENT: Singing Teddy Bears Picnic while riding through beautiful lush green woods. Trying to engage and make smile the waiter who did a really good impersonation of Manuel from Fawlty Towers.

Being locked out of Spain! (With only 1 ferry working, our ferryman decided to cancel our crossing without any notice. After waiting hours for the next trip, we finally got to the Spanish border to find the gates locked! (He'd left the keys on the other side). We waited while he went back to Portugal and got them!

Crossing the ferry from Portugal to Spain | Desrae Cameron

FEEDBACK/ADVICE: You need to be a fairly experienced cyclist/mountain bike rider to tackle this ride. Why? Because at times you need to make sound, safe decisions regarding the route and this comes down to your cycling ability. The 30kg bikes can be difficult to manoeuvre. [Editor's note: UTracks now have a new fleet of lighter e-bikes available in 2025 onwards.]

At times it is not safe/or suitable terrain to continue on the Camino walking course by bike. Sometimes you need to digress to some country sealed roads for short riding stints given that the walking terrain becomes tricky and not suitable for heavy electric mountain bikes.

Reaching Santiago de Compostela by bike | Desrae Cameron

OUTCOME: Always keep the sea on your left in view when cycling through Portugal and once crossed into Spain, keep looking for the Camino sign (yellow arrow and shell), to stay on track if you have needed to digress the course, then you can’t go wrong 😁🚴‍♀️

The bike and barge tour is a great way to explore and experience cities, villages, and the natural beauty along the Danube River. We loved the simplicity of having a local guide brief us on sites to see and not having to navigate unfamiliar roads. About the Camino Portuguese

Walking or cycling the Portuguese Camino is an incredibly rewarding and meaningful experience. Whether you choose to walk the Camino Portuguese or cycle the Camino Portuguese, you will have an unforgettable tour all the way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

The Camino Portuguese is considered the more spiritually connected of all of the Camino routes to Santiago because Portugal is where the apostle St James, whose tomb is at Santiago Cathedral, first preached. Many believe that his final journey to Santiago was via Portugal when his bones were brought back from Jerusalem after he was beheaded.

The Camino Portuguese provides walkers and cyclists with a quieter, and flatter, experience. However, do not mistake the absence of travellers for a lack of interesting sights. The traditional Camino Portuguese route, the Portuguese Way, is beautiful and packed with history, taking you through World Heritage-listed Coimbra, Portugal’s early medieval capital famous for its 13th century university, and rural regions that you may otherwise never experience on a tour of Portugal.

There are various Camino Portuguese stages you can explore on a UTracks tour. On a cycling trip of the Portuguese Way, you can choose to cycle the stages from Lisbon to Porto; from Porto to Santiago; or cycle the full Portuguese Way route from Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

If you choose to do a self guided walking tour of the Portuguese Way, also known as the Portuguese Road, you can walk the stages from Lisbon to Coimbra; from Coimbra to Porto; from Porto to Tui; from Tui to Santiago; or the full Portuguese Camino from Lisbon to Santiago in Spain.

Another option is the even quieter Portuguese Coastal Way. This stunning alternative to the Portuguese Way takes you along the wild Atlantic coast of northern Portugal, past charming seaside villages and picturesque beaches, before meeting up with the traditional route in Spain to the end point in Santiago de Compostela.

There is also the popular Best of the Portuguese Camino trip, which is an affordable small group guided walking tour that takes in the most iconic stage of the Camino Portuguese and includes accommodation in Portugal's famous parador hotels.

Watch: Walking & Cycling in the Cotswolds Film

Tim Charody, the award-winning filmmaker, has captured what it's like to experience an active holiday in the Cotswolds with UTracks. Whether you're walking the iconic Cotswold Way, cycling in the Cotswolds, or taking one of our exploratory walking itineraries, you're sure to have a brilliant time in this part of England.

About the Cotswolds

The Cotswolds are a range of gentle hills extending northeast of the city of Bath, through Cheltenham to Stratford-upon-Avon, the ‘Heart of England’. The Cotswold landscape, you will discover, is an entrancing mixture of parkland, cultivated fields with dry-stone walls and patches of unspoilt woodland. Early prosperity based on the medieval woollen industry and the availability of easily worked honey-coloured limestone resulted in the building of a unique cluster of beautiful towns and villages.

The Cotswolds is a perfect walking destination | Tim Charody

The Cotswolds is the epitome of the English countryside. It is no wonder that this is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as rolling hills meet with quaint villages that are all preserved in a glorious state.

There is no better way to explore this stunning region of patchwork fields surrounded by dry-stone walls and acres of unspoilt woodland, than taking by part in some walks in the Cotswolds. Allowing you to enjoy this scenery at your own pace.

Cycling in the Cotswolds | Tim Charody

If you want to make the most of this idyllic region, then why not go cycling in the Cotswolds. Meander through the countryside visiting postcard perfect medieval villages that are all built in the honey toned limestone that characterises this part of the British countryside. Churches and stately homes adorn this part of England, and there is nothing more rewarding than a walk or cycle in the Cotswolds.

We chose the Cotswold Walk and can't recommend it highly enough. The beautiful scenery and gorgeous villages along the way made it pretty special. The accommodation was great and breakfast at each destination kept us going through the day. The instructions were fantastic, very detailed and made it a lot easier to find where we were going. Also no issues with the luggage arriving at our accommodation each night. Highly recommend them and can't wait until our next adventure. M. Whitney.

The crew (skipper, bosan, guide, cook) were all professional and fun and ensured all the guests were safe, enjoying themselves and extremely well fed.

The cabins were comfortable and the showers functioned exceptionally well with good pressure and warmth. J. Muir.
