Trip highlights

  • Experience the breathtaking scenery of the Dolomites
  • Explore the ‘iron ways’ through exhilarating climbs on ladders and across bridges
  • Stay in a charming mountain hotel brimming with warm hospitality
  • Enjoy the camaraderie of your group as you explore the high trails and escarpments of the Dolomites

The breathtaking pinnacles of the Dolomites are well known to climbers around the world. During WWI, the Dolomite mountain range was the scene of heavy fighting and became an almost continuous front throughout the war, from Cortina d'Ampezzo in the west to the Predil Pass in the east. Making full use of their elite Alpine mountain troops, the Italians fixed iron ladders and wire cable to the rock to enable them to fight on the vertical walls. Today these Via Ferrata 'iron ways' have been turned into recreational climbs, allowing non-climbers to discover the mountains in safety and adding a new dimension to hiking the pristine alpine wilderness of the Dolomites. Daily climbs and walks are between 4 and 6 hours depending on the fitness of the group. Nights are spent in mountain hotels sampling the specialty foods of the region. Although no previous climbing experience is required, a high level of fitness and sense of adventure is essential.

On arrival in the Hochpuster Valley you can be picked up from Niederdorf/Villabassa or Toblach/Dobbiaco train station and transferred to the hotel, or you can make your own way to the hotel. The hotel is your base for the next 6 nights. You will meet your guide and the rest of the group for a trip briefing in the evening (7pm). Later there will be a group dinner where you will have the chance to discuss the adventure ahead.

This morning we transfer to the foot of the first Via Ferrata where the climbing equipment will be distributed. We start with an easy but very interesting climbing path on the Paternkofel (Paterno, 2744m). Some sections of the Via Ferrata verge on the vertical today, however the climb is not long and the views at the summit are well worth the effort. The iconic Tre Cime (Three Peaks), whose walls have inspired climbers for generations, are always in view. Later we descend through the old war tunnels to the Three Peaks Hut before returning to the hotel. Ascent: 300 to 800m /984 to 2624ft

Today we ascend the flanks of Sextner Rotwand, also known as the Peak 10 or Cima Dieci, beginning with a cable car ride to the Rotwand meadow at around 1900m. The mountain is located on the northeastern side of the Sexten Dolomites and the ferrate although quite long are not overly demanding. The climb enables you to appreciate close-up the stunning peaks in the region including Prater (2745m) and Torre Pellegrini (2757m). We take the climbing path to the summit, enjoying the views before descending to our hotel, first by foot through the Rotwand meadow then by cable car and transfer. Ascent: 350 to 840m / 1150 to 2755ft

Meals:  B,D

From Misurina we ascend to the Fondo Savio hut, following the Merlone climbing path to the Cima Cadin NE. Ascent: 300 to 400m /984 to 1312 ft

Meals:  B,D

Today we ascend to Rifugio Lorenzi and from here on the Marino Bianchi climbing path to Cima di Mezzo (3154m). Ascent: 230 to 800m /755 to 2624ft

Meals:  B,D

North of Cortina d'Ampezzo, will start the demading ascent to the Col Rosa. Descending from the summit we may pass by the Fanes Canyon with a view of the waterfall. Ascent: 450 to 950m /1476 to 3116ft

Grading

moderate to challenging

GRADE 4 - MODERATE TO CHALLENGING Anyone undertaking a moderate to challenging trip should be aware of the physical and mental demands involved. This trip is designed for experienced walkers who are seeking a challenge. No previous climbing experience is required to undertake this trip. An above average level of fitness is required as days can involve up to 6 hours of strenuous exercise in rugged terrain. You need to be sure footed and have a head for heights as there are some steep drops close to the paths and Via Ferrata. Weather conditions may be harsh at times (even in summer), and you will need to be comfortable walking in such conditions. We suggest up to one hour of strenuous exercise 3-4 times a week. The best exercise for trekking is long bushwalks involving relatively steep ascents and descents. It is also good to have a bit of upper body strength - though the Via Ferrata is mostly only ladders there are sections which are exposed/airy with the need to keep three points of contact. Note - we have included a estimate of hours of climbing on the day to day itinerary, however the accuracy of this information will depend on group fitness – usually the daily climbs will be from 3-6 hours. The amount of climbing will depend on the group/conditions as there are several options depending on the abilities/desires of the group however most sections, if not all, are steep and at times vertical. For every climb there is a walk in and walk out which may also be strenuous at times.
