Explore the mountain landscapes of Romania and discover the rich culture and traditions of Transylvania on this self-guided walking adventure. Piatra Craiului, meaning 'royal stone', is a dramatic limestone ridge in the Southern Carpathians which rises sharply from the forests and plains below, offering one of the best ridge walks in Europe. En route to the Bucegi Mountains, explore the gorges and ridgetops of Piatra Craiului to experience exceptional views of the region. The Bucegi mountains are home to a diverse range of landscapes from pine and beech forests to flower laden meadows and high limestone cliffs. It is also where you can find Bran Castle, connected through folklore to the fictitious character, Dracula. Before returning to Bucharest you can explore Brasov, known for its well-preserved medieval Old Town, dramatic mountain backdrop and rich history. Whilst the legends of Transylvania are an enticing reason to visit this region, the walking opportunities and the friendly atmosphere created by your hosts in the rural pensions guarantee this will be a unique and diverse adventure.

Day 2
Walk to Bran Castle, famously associated with the legend of Dracula (4hrs)
Today you will walk along a small ridge leading to Bran Castle, at the foot of the Bucegi mountains. The castle was built as a gift from Ludovic d'Anjou in the 14th century to the inhabitants of the region and had a defensive role against the migratory peoples. Later it protected Transylvania from the Ottoman invasions. The castle was also associated with the prince Vlad Tepes of Walachia, upon whom it is widely thought the fictional character 'Dracula' was based. Entry into the castle is optional (it is busy in peak season and on weekends, we suggest buying tickets online). In the late afternoon transfer back to your guesthouse in Magura. If you're not interested in visiting the castle, or simply prefer walking more, returning on foot to Magura is possible: you can take a pleasant wooden trail, part of the Via Transilvanica long distance trail that crosses Romania from North-East to South-West. Walking: approx 4hrs, 10km/6.25mi, +450m/1476ft, -700m/2296ft Optional extension: 9km/5.6mi, +650m/2132ft, -400m/1312ft

Day 3
Continue on foot through Piatra Craiului mountains and rural villages (5-6hrs)
Today's walk is in the National Park of Piatra Craiului, through pastures, sheepfolds, woods and scattered villages and is an interesting contrast to the landscape of the previous day. Scattered villages which seem unchanged for centuries dot the landscape, while the surrounding mountains are a constant companion. End the day in the traditional mountain village of Ciocanu where the accommodation is a cosy lodge (with possible shared bathroom). Two walking options are available, either a smoother walk through Curmatura Groapelor or a more adventurous one (not recommended in poor weather) that features two significantly steep sections: one descent and one ascent. Walking: approx 14.5km/9mi, +550m/1805ft, -420m/1378ft. Long version: approx 6hrs, 16km/10mi, +700m/2297ft, -550m/1805ft.
Day 4
Walk to Bucegi's mountains through picture postcard landscapes (5hrs)
Today's route leaves the Piatra Craiului mountains. It's an easy walk with 'postcard' landscapes through lovely villages sheltering small, old houses at the foot of the Bucegi mountains. The locals are livestock breeders and the region has a long tradition in cheese making. Overnight in the village of Moeciu de Sus. Walking: 15km/9.4mi, +550m/1805ft, -700m/2296ft
Day 5
Ascend the Bucegi Mountains with stunning views (6hrs or 4.5hrs)
A strenuous day as you ascend trails into the Bucegi mountains. The route starts with a gentle, steady climb to the open alpine meadows of Gutanu, alongside the sheer rock walls of the Bucegi Ridge. Keep your camera handy—you'll enjoy incredible views stretching right across to the rugged limestone crest of Piatra Craiului. Return to your guesthouse in Moeciu de Sus. Full walking option: around 6hrs, 15km/9.4mi, +750m/2460ft, -850m/2789ft Shorter option: around 4hrs, 9km/5.6mi, +400m/1312ft, -550m/1804ft
Day 6
Transfer to Brasov, explore at leisure, overnight
After breakfast, a short transfer (1hr) takes you to Brasov. Drop your luggage at the hotel and the remainder of the day is free to explore. It's one of the seven cities founded by the Saxons in the 12th century when they were invited to Transylvania to guard the mountain passes and has a vibrant mix of Saxon, Hungarian, and Romanian history. Enjoy exploring its colourful medieval streets, cosy cafés, and red-roofed houses tucked safely within the old city walls. Wander through Council Square, visit the famous Gothic Black Church, or snap photos at the White and Black Towers. If you'd like more trail time, you can walk through the woods up to Tâmpa Hill (at 960m/3149ft) for sweeping views over the city—or simply ride the cable car to the top. Stay overnight in a central, cosy hotel. Optional walk from 1 to 3 hrs, +/-300m. There is also the opportunity to visit the Libearty Bear Sanctuary outside Brasov. Ask for details, must prebook. Extra nights in Brasov can be booked on request.
