Trip highlights

  • Cycling along the Baltic coast in Latvia and Estonia
  • Discovering the island of Saaremaa and the wildness of two national parks
  • Exploring the UNESCO listed historic centres of Riga, Tallinn and St Petersburg and the small towns and villages enroute
  • The flexibility of a self guided cycle with the support and back up of a guided trip

Discover the contrasting characters of Latvia, Estonia and Russia's St Petersburg on this scenic supported trip along the Baltic Coast. Cycle on the largest and most beautiful Estonian island of Saaremaa, visit two capital cities – Riga and Tallinn before travelling to St Petersburg, also known as the ‘Cultural Capital of Russia’. The old towns of both capital cities and the historical centre of St Petersburg are designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. Starting from Riga, dip your toes in the Baltic Sea at the white sandy beaches of Jurmula, visit Latvia's oldest Church and discover Gauja National park. Crossing into Estonia, pedal through Saaremaa Island to Sorve Peninsula with its famous lighthouse and visit the Kaali meteorite crater before heading to Tallinn. From Tallinn cycle to the National Park Lahemaa and along the Russian border to Tartu, where you leave your bikes and transfer to St Petersburg, where you can explore the city's cultural riches. Throughout the trip, experience a wide variety of towns, villages and countryside for an excellent introduction to the very distinct characters of these quite different countries. Vehicle support is provided whilst cycling for your luggage transfers and to provide assistance during the cycle day if required, while professional guides will take you on city tours in each capital and St Petersburg.

Bike information

MODERATE GRADE 3 The trip requires a reasonable level of fitness to fully participate in the cycling. The biking routes (days 2-8) are mainly on low traffic roads and cycle paths with a few stretches on busy roads (Day 3 from Ragana-Sigulda). Cycling routes range from 20 to 57 km / 13 to 36 mi each day with a possibility for faster riders to cycle more kilometres on some days (Day 2 to Jurmala, Day 5 on Saaremaa Island, Day 7 at Lahemaa national park and Day 8 by cycling the longer route towards Tartu. The terrain is varied and rolling with a few gradual hills on some riding days, some steep ups and downs in the Gauja River valley, and dead flat most of the tour. The tour covers two Baltic States – Latvia & Estonia, and St Petersburg in Russia, and therefore it includes a few long minibus transfers between the most interesting cycling destinations, the Baltic capital cities and St Petersburg. The walking tours in the old towns of the Baltic capital cities, Riga and Tallinn, are along cobbled streets.
