Trip highlights

  • Experiencing the breathtaking scenery of Sutjeska National Park
  • Visiting the small, authentic mountain villages and tasting the local food
  • Viewing the amazing heart shaped Trnovacko Lake
  • Enjoying the camaraderie of your fellow travellers

Explore one of the original and most breathtaking stretches of the Via Dinarica, a long distance mountainous walking trail spanning seven Balkan countries, on a route that crosses borders through Sutjeska National Park in Bosnia to Durmitor National Park in Montenegro (also a UNESCO World Heritage site). This section of the trail follows the Dinaric Alps and collects mesmerising natural sights along the way: the heart-shaped Trnovacko glacial lake; the turquoise waters of Rakitnica Canyon; and the rocky panoramas of Bosnia's highest peak, Maglic. These are highlights in an already glorious landscape woven with primeval forests and cosy mountain villages, such as in Lukomir, whose inhabitants continue to live a traditional way of life. Finish your journey in charming Sarajevo and witness the fusion of west and east European culture. This Balkan trip will satisfy those who want an idyllic walking experience that's still largely untamed and undiscovered

Arrive at Sarajevo airport by 1pm for the group transfer to Tjentiste (98km, 2hrs). On arrival this afternoon take the time to walk around the village of Tjentiste - the town lies wholly within the Sutjeska National Park, which was established in 1962 and is Bosnia and Herzegovina's oldest national park.

Meals:  B,D

In the morning we have a short transfer to Suha (6km) where we will commence our walk. We will hike along the border of Perucica, one of the last remaining primeval forests of Europe. Continue from here along the ridge until we reach the Prijevor pass, then hike back towards Suha following the natural gorge between the high rocks. Short transfer from Suha back to our hotel in Tjentiste. Walking: 17km/10.5mi

Meals:  B,L,D

After breakfast we will transfer to the Prijevor pass to commence walking. We walk to the majestic, heart shaped lake Trnovacko lake, nestled below the peaks of Maglic, Volujak, Vlasulja and Bioc. We hike in the direction of the highest peak of the Bioc massif, called Veliki Vitao. Depending on the time, our guide may choose a path through Stabna plateau or over the Stabna Lakes to Stabna village. A transfer from here will take us to the town of Pluzine, where we stay overnight. Dinner tonight will be in an authentic jazz restaurant. Walking: 16.5km/10.25mi

Meals:  B,L,D

We transfer to Mratinje via Lake Piva (Pivsko) to start our day's hiking through the Sutjeska National Park. Returning to the sparkling Trnovacko lake we will have time to refresh ourselves in the invigorating blue/green waters of the glacial lake while enjoying the views of the Volujak and Maglic peaks. From the lake we will hike to Prijevor where we will be transferred to our hotel in Tjentiste. Walking: 18km/11mi

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning after breakfast we transfer to Dobre Bare (1490m), and hike from Donje Bare Lake into the canyon of Sutjeska River. Before descending into the canyon we can detour for 10 minutes to the viewpoint at Boric, where it's possible to see the highest peak of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Maglic (2386), as well as the Volujak and Durmitor mountains in Montenegro. Continuing through the meadows we will soon come to the high beech forest at Kovacev Panj. Meet our transfer at the main road which will take us to our Sarajevo hotel. Walking: 9.5km/5.9mi

Meals:  B,L,D

A short transfer this morning will take us to the village of Umoljani in the Bjelašnica mountains. En route we will pass the location of the Sarajevo Winter Olympic Games, held in 1984. From Umoljani we will take a gentle walk to Lukomir village which is the highest settlement in Bosnia at 1469m. This village is fascinating with its medieval tombstones and where the residents still follow a traditional shepherd way of life. A homemade lunch will be served with a local family after which we will return to Sarajevo for our last night.

Grading

moderate to challenging

MODERATE to CHALLENGING – GRADE 4 Anyone undertaking a moderate to challenging trip should be aware of the physical and mental demands involved. This trip is designed for experienced walkers who are seeking a challenge. No previous climbing experience is required to undertake this trip. An above average level of fitness is required as days can involve up to 8 hours of strenuous exercise in rugged terrain. You need to be sure footed and have a head for heights as there are some steep drops close to the paths. Weather conditions may be harsh at times (even in summer), and you will need to be comfortable walking in such conditions. We suggest up to one hour of strenuous exercise 3-4 times a week. The best exercise for trekking is bushwalking/hillwalking involving relatively steep ascents and descents.
