While historic climate change talks were taking place in Paris, Slovenia kicked off 2016 with its very own green win when Ljubljana was named the European Green Capital for 2016. But it is not only Slovenia's capital that is ‘green’. With over two-thirds of Europeans living in towns or cities, Slovenia offers active travellers a welcome respite. It ranks in the top three most forested countries in Europe. Almost 60% of its territory is covered by forest. And every year more than one million trees are planted. So, you can expect to breathe in some fresh, clean air next time you visit. WALK TO THE TOP OF THE JULIAN ALPS

The gorgeous Julian Alps in the northwestern corner of Slovenia, were the stage of bitter fighting during World War I. It was while based in these mountains that Ernest Hemingway wrote his book ‘Farewell to Arms’. Characterised by high mountain lakes, peaceful alpine valleys and rugged limestone peaks, more recently it has become famous as a trekking destination. The Julian Alps allow for ascents along thematic paths, including an option to climb Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest mountain. CYCLE AROUND THE JULIAN ALPS

A natural abundance of mountains, lakes, rivers, caves and forests makes Slovenia ideal for a thrilling active holiday. From the picturesque Lake Bohinj and the lakeside town of Bled, you can cycle around the limestone mountains of the Julian Alps. The area offers so much variation; every day looks like you’re in a different region. Use Europe's Green Capital as a base to explore even more of the countryside. Because distances between places are short, you can visit the Slovenian coast and high mountains to the north all from the capital. Ljubljana itself has plenty of green spaces, such as the Tivoli Park, Tabor Park and the areas around Ljubljanica River. Culture buffs will love the National Museum of Slovenia and Museum of Modern Art.
