The Francigena of Sigerico Way. Just like the Compostela Trail, this 11th Century pilgrimage trail, stretching 1900 km from Canterbury in England to the site of Martyrdom of St Peter and St Paul in Rome, is referred to by a number of names. And, just like the Camino, it’s about to become one of the most iconic long distance walking routes in Europe. Walking near Monteriggioni on the Francigena Way There are currently only limited sections available for walkers on organised trips along the Francigena Way and around 2500 people walk these sections each year. This is the same number of people that walked the Camino just a few decades ago, and now the famous trail crossing from France into Spain sees over 200,000 people a year follow its course. With an organic revival of the route taking place, the release of more walking stages in Italy - such as our five new stages - and a new English guidebook detailing the routes by Cicerone in 2014, we’re anticipating a surge in popularity as people search for more iconic pilgrimage opportunities.
