From the streetscapes of Rome, littered with must-see ancient sites, to the dramatic cliffs and picturesque villages of the idyllic Amalfi Coast, this engaging week of activity will allow you to explore some of Italy's most diverse attractions and landscapes. In the company of an expert local guide you will discover the hidden treasures of Rome, enjoy a typical southern Italian lunch at a family run vineyard, visit a local limoncello producer for a tasty tipple as well as sample the savoury cheeses of Sorrento. Burning off the calories will be easy and fun when you hike to the top of the Mount Vesuvius volcano and take a boat to the beautiful island of Capri to discover and immerse yourself into the local way of life. Surrounded by verdant forests and with sweeping views of the Mediterranean, your base at Agerola is the ideal location to explore the many natural highlights of the Amalfi Coast and nearby Pompeii. Arrive in Rome and meet with your guide at the hotel in the centre of Rome at 6pm. After settling in, there's a briefing with the guide to discuss the week's activities before dinner at a restaurant. Overnight in Rome.

Meals:  D

In the morning we will discover an unusual side of the city, taking a guided bike tour through the regional park of the Appia Antica, the old Roman road to Brindisi, rich in ancient treasures including basilicas and catacombs. Later we'll meet with a licensed guide for a tour on foot to discover the fascinating beauty of Rome: the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Piazza di Spagna ... we will have a look at all the classics of this monument-packed city. Dinner is at leisure this evening and overnight in Rome. 2 hours walking and 2 hours cycling

Meals:  B,L

This morning we will leave Rome by train to Naples, where we are met by a minibus to continue to Herculaneum. Here we'll have a typical lunch in a family-run vineyard. After our short visit of the winery, we'll climb the sleeping giant of Mt Vesuvius. You can look right down into the steaming crater and imagine the eruption of 79 AD, when huge flaming boulders were hurled all the way to the Bay of Naples! The walk to the crater and back will take around 2 hours and is suitable for anyone of reasonable fitness. Later we'll transfer by minibus to our accommodation in Agerola, where we will have a lesson on how to make the perfect Neapolitan pizza with our chef. Ascent/descent: +200m/656ft, -200m/656ft, 4km/2.5mi

Meals:  B,L,D

After breakfast, a private transfer will take us to the harbour at Amalf to catch a boat to the Isle of Capri. Here we'll visit the Matromania caves and the 'Terrazza di Tragara', walking along a colourful path with villas and flower-filled gardens. We'll enjoy great views of Capri’s iconic limestone stacks known as the 'Faraglioni' and 'Monte Solaro'. In the afternoon we'll return to Amalfi and transfer back to Agerola. Ascent/descent: +300m/984ft, -300m/984ft, 7.5km/4.6mi

Meals:  B,L,D

In the morning a private transfer will take us to the town of Amalfi, once a powerful maritime republic and where the Amalfi Tables were founded, the oldest maritime code in the world. After an interesting visit to the paper museum, we'll start our walk through the delightful Valle Mulini (‘valley of the mills’), once the centre of an important paper industry on the Amalfi coast. We'll arrive in Ravello, a picturesque and peaceful village located high on a cliff overlooking the sea, and have some free time to explore the village and have a gelato, before walking back to Amalfi. Private transfer back to our hotel in Agerola for dinner and overnight. Ascent/descent: +500m/1640ft, -500m/1640ft, 11km/6.8mi

Meals:  B,L,D

After breakfast we will transfer to Sorrento where we'll have a guided visit of this enchanting town. Afterwards, we will stop at a typical cheese factory for a visit and light lunch tasting some local products. We will then reach Pompeii for a guided visit of the ancient Roman town. Everyone knows the story of Pompeii, buried under ash for hundreds of years after the catastrophic eruption of nearby Vesuvius - but walking around and seeing this incredible sleeping city is quite another story. After our visit we will transfer back to Agerola for dinner and overnight.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we will walk the trail between Agerola and Positano known as the “Path of the Gods”. This is an ancient terraced mule clifftop path linking the towns, offering spectacular views. Positano is a small and charming fishing village. From Positano to Amalfi, we'll take a boat to admire the Amalfi coast (subject to sea conditions), then transfer back to Agerola, where we will visit a local Limoncello producer. Dinner and overnight in Agerola. Ascent/descent: +200m/655ft, -700m/1510ft, 10km/6.2mi

Meals:  B,L,D

After breakfast there will be a group transfer at 9 am to Naples airport or train station, where the trip concludes. We suggest making onward arrangements from Naples airport after 12 noon, if you are using the group transfer.

About Your Leader

Satva is a guide on our Rome and the Amalfi Coast on Foot guided walking holiday

Satva is from the village of Agerola on the Amalfi Coast. She grew up in the countryside, surrounded by the amazing landscape of this area. During her studies, she developed a passion for trekking, theatre and southern Italian dances. All these past experiences assist with her work as an environmental guide. When not guiding she loves meditating, folk dancing, theatre, craft and gardening. When leading, she always likes to ensure her groups have a deep immersion in the Neapolitan culture!

Note: Whilst Satva is a regular guide on this trip, we reserve the right to use other guides for some departures.
