Trip highlights

  • Cycling through the stunning Moselle Valley
  • Wine tasting in Kues and learning of the ancient wine growing traditions of the region
  • Experiencing the areas rich history through its impressive castles and towns
  • Relaxing on board the comfortable barge

Originating in the Vosges Mountains in the French region of Alsace, the fabled Moselle River flows north along the Luxembourg border and into Germany for 545km in total before it meets the Rhine River at the cultural city of Koblenz. The picturesque valley formed by the river is home to a rich tradition of wine making, Germany's oldest town and a strong Roman and medieval heritage. The section between Koblenz and Cochem is known as 'castle country' due to its abundance of castles including the fairytale Eltz Castle considered to be one of the finest in Germany. Based on a comfortable barge, this cycle journey along the Moselle and its tributary, the Saar, offers an ideal balance of activity, history, culture and relaxation.

On arrival in Koblenz, you are welcome on board the MS Patria, a river boat with a comfortable atmosphere, between 4 and 5pm. The captain and his crew will welcome you on board at approximately 6pm. Located at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers, the city has been an important defence centre for the region over its more than 2000 year history. Its impressive fortifications are still in good condition today and it's worth exploring these, as well as the old town with its ancient churches.

Meals:  D

The first section of the route today between Koblenz and Alken will be by boat. At Alken the cycle begins by crossing the river via a bridge and continuing along the banks of the Moselle. The first stop is Moselkern, a small town located at the confluence of the Elz and Moselle rivers. You can park your bike in the hikers carpark before walking (around 35 minutes) through the Elztal valley to Eltz Castle. Eltz Castle is considered one of the best preserved castles in Germany and has been privately owned by the Edlen Herren und Grafen (Lords and Counts) von und zu Eltz for more than 800 years. Guided tours are available in English. Continue cycling to the town of Cochem, overshadowed by the impressive Reichsburg Castle dating from 1051. The town is surrounded by vineyards and is located in the bend of the river providing stunning scenery and an old world atmosphere.

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning you will cycle along the windings of the river Moselle to Beilstein. After a short walk around this city you will pass the steepest vineyard in Europe, Bremmer Calmont. Continue to Zell an der Mosel, which is well-known for the vineyard "Zellar Schwarze Katz". In the evening you will have the chance to visit a local winegrower where you can enjoy a wine tasting of some of the famous Moselle wines (supplement applies).

Meals:  B,L,D

Today you will cycle to Traben-Trarbach, the city of Art Nouveau which displays historic architecture at its best. Afterwards you continue through the well-known village Krov to Bernkastel. Bernkastel-Kues is an ideal place to stroll around with its stylish medieval market square surrounded by half timbered houses. You will find the barge in Keus after cycling through the town.

Meals:  B,L,D

Cycle tour to Piesport, the oldest winegrowing community along the Moselle. Here you can book a guided tour and visit the Roman cellars and the vineyards. Further on you come to Neumage-Dhron, the oldest wine village in Germany. Here you can visit the clone of a Roman wine boat. After lunch the cycle continues on to Mehring, a typical winegrowing village, where the boat is waiting for you.

Meals:  B,L,D

The cycle this morning takes us past the small town of Pfalzel and on to Trier, considered to be Germany's oldest city, where the boat will be waiting there for you. In the afternoon you can explore the city in a special kind of way. Book a city walk with a "traditional Roman". There are numerous Roman and medieval sites of interest such as the Roman gateway, the Porta Nigra, which is not surprising given its incredible history and important position in the Roman Empire. Note: on some departures the overnight stop will be in Konz instead of Trier.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today you will be cycling along the river to Saarburg, also known as "Little Venice". As you explore the town you will enjoy the narrow alleys, half-timbered houses, baroque buildings and colourful fisher and boat houses. In the centre of town you'll also find a waterfall which is 20 metres deep.
