Trip highlights

  • Cycling through the rolling hills of the stunning Burgundy countryside
  • Exploring interesting historical towns and villages
  • Enjoying the culinary specialties
  • Soaking up the hospitality of a family run hotel in the centre of Beaune

Based in Burgundy's wine capital, Beaune, this short break combines cycling through the grand estates with time to soak up the charm of the town. The nearby vineyards offer a number of interesting cycle routes on a combination of dedicated cycle paths and minor roads, past rolling vine covered hills and small hamlets brimming with local produce. Sample wines at the cellar door or stop for a leisurely lunch at one of the many restaurants in the region. There is ample time to appreciate the great history of Beaune and a visit to the hospices is a highlight.

Today's excursion is devoted to discovering the famous wine area "Côte de Nuits" known for the "Grands Vins de Bourgogne" and more especially the red wines: Chambolle Musigny, Vosne Romanée and the most expensive wine of Burgundy, Romanée Conti. You will also appreciate some famous sights such as the Château du Clos Vougeot or the Château of Gevrey Chambertin. Overnight in Beaune. Ascent 306m/1004ft, descent 310m/1017ft

Today you cycle to the delightful town of Chagny, crossed by the Canal du Centre and the ‘Voie Verte’ (cycle path). Following the cycling tracks will lead you to the prestigious ‘Côte de Beaune’ vineyards such as Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet or Pommard. You will have the opportunity also to visit the Château de la Rochepot: a magnificent 13th and 15th century fortress with roofs made of glazed tiles. We recommend you stop at Olivier Leflaive for a special cyclists wine tasting lunch in the town of Puligny-Montrachet (note: bookings are required). Overnight in Beaune. Ascent 531m/1742ft, descent 536m/1758ft

Grading

moderate

This trip involves 3 days cycling usually along backroads with minimal car traffic (although some short distances will have heavier traffic). The cycling distance is from 43 to 65km / 27 to 40.5mi per day over often hilly terrain, which should take between 3-6 hours. You need only carry your camera and water bottle etc. This trip requires a good level of fitness. *For safety reasons, we highly recommend that cycle helmets are worn – these will be provided to you with your bike.
