The Sörmlandsleden or Sörmland Trail is a 1000 kilometre long lowland hiking trail extending from Stockholm south to Nyköping and beyond. The trail passes through the coastal and countryside landscape of Sörmland packed full of history, small and large lakes, dense forests and rocky seaside vistas. Created in 1973, it is still one of Sweden's longest trails. On this trip, sample the highlights of the southern section of the trail over 5 days beginning from the historical harbour city of Nyköping. Including the spectacular pristine Lake Nävsjön, trails through ancient pine forests and sections of the route with far-stretching views of the countryside, the trip captures the essence of this diverse and interesting trail. A highlight is the rich culture and history unique to the area with ancient ruins and charming villages dotted along the well marked trail. There are opportunities to swim at beaches along the Bråviken coastline, spot a variety of bird species in the unspoiled forests and stop for picnics beside glistening lakes. To truly appreciate the local culture, stay in handpicked eclectic B&Bs and guesthouses and embrace the warm character of the region through its genuine hospitality and classic Swedish cuisine.

The bustling harbour town of Nyköping is an easy one hours train journey from Stockholm. On arrival, drop your bags at your first night's accommodation leaving the remainder of the day to explore. The planned walk follows the picturesque Nyköping river from the harbour through the town centre and on to open countryside. Marvel in the many interesting sights along the way including Nyköping's landmark - Nyköpingshus castle, Hållet nature reserve, Slabro rock carvings and many historical bridges, each with their own story to tell. After crossing open countryside your walk then ends in Oppeby, where you can take the bus back to Nyköping. This evening take a stroll through the lively harbour and enjoy its vibrant atmosphere. Walking distance: 8km / 5mi

The day begins with a morning transfer from your hotel to the beautiful Kiladalen region to Lake Nävsjön - a popular Swedish destination for outdoor adventure. Starting with an 8 km loop around the lake, the trail hugs the shores and offers plenty of places to swim and absorb the views. After completing the loop, continue on the Sörmlandsleden towards Nävekvarn through a peaceful forest to the shores of Bråviken. As you weave your way along the shoreline, you will begin your ascent to Nävekvarn Klint hilltop where you can enjoy far-stretching views back across the Baltic sea. Take your time here to enjoy the views before descending into Nävekvarn, a seaside village rich in history. Nävekvarn has become a walker's paradise thanks to the many Sörmlandsleden trails that start and end in this quaint little village. Walking distance 17.5km / 11mi

Meals:  B,L

Today you take the bus from Nävekvarn to Buskhyttan. There is a short 4km walk from Buskhyttan to Koppartorp, where there is an array of walking loops you can explore. One route takes you around the foot of Kummelberget hill or enjoy a bit of a challenge and take the ascent up to Simonberget hill where you can enjoy spectacular views across the countryside. On returning to Koppartorp, wander through the district rich in culture and history. You might choose to visit the local folklore museum or mining museum dating back to the 14th century, a glimmer of the town's history. Return by bus to Nävekvarn. This afternoon you might enjoy exploring the little island Skäret on Nävekvarn's doorstep. Walking distance 14km / 8.5mi

Meals:  B,L

This morning your walk will begin from your B&B in Nävekvarn. The route will follow the spectacular Bråviken coast, enjoying coastal scenery from both the water's edge and from hilltops along the way, with endless views. This is a beautiful stretch of coastline and is considered one of the most scenic days on the trail. Feel free to take a break from the walking and relish in the handful of beaches along the way. A transfer will meet you at the end of today's hike and return you to the harbour town of Nyköping. Walking distance 18km / 11mi
