Trip highlights

  • Experience two sides of alpine Slovenia — begin with the lake, villages and wooded landscapes around Bled before crossing into the more dramatic river country of the Soca Valley.
  • Follow the water — walk through Vintgar Gorge, beside the Sava Bohinjka and Soca rivers, through the Great Soca Gorge and to Virje and Boka waterfalls.
  • Enjoy achievable alpine walking — six walks range from approximately three to six hours, predominantly following valley and riverside trails with no significant climbs
  • Encounter villages, Kluže fortress and First World War heritage alongside gorges, rivers, waterfalls and alpine meadows.
  • Discover the cultural heritage, local cuisine and history of western Slovenia
  • Stay in comfortable 4 star hotels in Bled and Bovec

Slovenia has been endowed with incredible natural beauty that stuns and inspires, and this active trip explores the highlights. This two centred holiday begins with time in Bled, a lovely lakeside town nestled in the foothills of the Julian Alps. Here you can try the creamy local cake, visit the cliff perched Bled Castle and walk around the famous glacial lake that features a picturesque island with a church on it. Discover the magic within nearby Vintgar Gorge and follow trails to Osojnica View Point for magnificent panoramas over Bled. Travel the fantastic Soca trail and cross pretty footbridges over clear alpine springs. Bovec provides a fitting finale. Known as Slovenia's centre for alpine adventure, it sits amid the mountains of the Soca Valley and provides access to a landscape of waterfalls, canyons and wildflower meadows. Walk to the emerald pools of Možnica canyon and historic Kluže fortress, then beneath the Kanin range to Virje and Boka waterfalls.

On arrival in Bled, it’s hard not to be impressed by its famous lake. Lake Bled is home to Slovenia’s only island, crowned by a church and overlooked by Bled Castle, perched on a 130m / 427ft rocky cliff. Beyond the lake rise the Karawanks and Julian Alps, creating an impressive introduction to Slovenia’s alpine landscapes. After an introductory briefing with our local representative to discuss the days ahead, the rest of the day is yours. Relax by the lakeshore or stretch your legs with a walk around the lake. Your accommodation for the next four nights is in Bled. A personal welcome briefing (included) will be arranged for your arrival.

Meals:  Nil

A short transfer takes you to Radovljica to begin your first full day on foot. From here, walk towards Talež, a popular picnic spot on the edge of the forested Jelovica plateau. After the climb, the route descends towards the Sava Bohinjka, following the shady riverside back towards Bled. It’s a varied introduction to the region, combining countryside, forest and river scenery away from the busier lakeshore. 12.4km / 7.7mi, +420m / 1378ft, -430m / 1411ft

Meals:  B

Today’s walk leads through the Radovna Valley to Vintgar Gorge, where the Radovna River has carved a narrow passage through the surrounding rock. Wooden walkways follow the 1.6 km / 1.0 mi gorge past rapids and waterfalls, allowing you to experience the river at close quarters. Continue via St Katarina, where a viewpoint provides another perspective over the surrounding countryside, before returning to Bled. 13.2km / 8.2mi, +160m / 525ft, -290m / 951ft

Meals:  B

Your final walk around Bled heads into the hills and villages surrounding the lake. Pass through Kupljenik and Bela before climbing to elevated viewpoints, including Osojnica. From here, enjoy the classic view across Lake Bled, its island and the surrounding mountains — a very different perspective from the lakeshore. This is one of the more undulating walks of the trip. Overnight in Bled. 15.3km / 9.5mi, +520m / 1706ft, -520m / 1706ft

Meals:  B

Leave Bled and transfer across the historic Vršic Pass into the Trenta Valley, marking the transition into the Soca Valley. From Trenta, set out along the Soca Trail, following the distinctive turquoise river downstream. Cross wooden bridges and continue through the Great Soca Gorge, where the river flows between narrow limestone walls. This is the longest walking day of the trip and an opportunity to experience the Soca Valley at walking pace before continuing to Bovec. 21km / 13.0mi, +240m / 787ft, -400m / 1312ft

Meals:  B

After yesterday’s longer walk, today is a shorter exploration of Možnica canyon. A transfer takes you to the start of the walk, where the route passes forest, clear pools and remnants of First World War fortifications. Continue to Kluže fortress, a historic fortification overlooking the valley, before returning to Bovec. 9.3km / 5.8mi, +130m / 427ft, -270m / 886ft

Meals:  B

Your final day on foot explores two of the waterfalls around Bovec. Walk beneath the Kanin range to Virje and Boka waterfalls before returning through flowered meadows below Mt Svinjak, Slovenia's Matterhorn. It’s a fitting conclusion to a journey shaped by Slovenia’s alpine waters, combining waterfalls, open landscapes and views of the surrounding mountains. Overnight Bovec. 16km / 9.9mi, +300m / 984ft, -300m / 984ft

Meals:  B

The trip concludes after breakfast in Bovec. We are able to arrange a transfer to Ljubljana or Bled - ask your consultant for details.
