  • Discovering the borderlands of Lithuania and Poland with their gentle hills, sandy plains, vast primeval forests, crystal clear lakes and deep river valleys
  • Visiting Dzukijos National Park, the largest in Lithuania

  • Cycling a section of Poland's 'Green Velo' cycle path and the Royal Route through Biebrza National Park

The borderlands of Lithuania and Poland are rich in natural features, with sandy plains, vast forests, crystal clear lakes and deep river valleys characterising the terrain. This supported cycle begins from the Lithuanian capital Vilnius and concludes in the Polish capital Warsaw, both famous for their UNESCO World Heritage listed Old towns. The program includes staying at the Druskininkai Spa Resort, cycling in Dzukija National PAN Park in Lithuania, cycling around Suwalki Lakeland with Wigry and Biebrza National Parks in Poland. Experience a variety of towns, villages and countryside for an excellent introduction to the distinct characters of these two countries, which had a common history known as the Polish – Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th to 18th centuries! The cultures, languages and cuisines add a fascinating dimension to this unique cycle journey.

On arrival in Vilnius, make your way to the joining hotel (or we can assist with an arrival transfer on request, please ask for our rates), where you'll stay for 2 nights. Vilnius has been Lithuania's capital for more than 600 years. There will be a city tour tomorrow morning however depending on when you arrive, we recommend taking a walk through the old town. In the evening there will be a welcome meeting with your guide.

After breakfast we head out for a guided walking tour of Vilnius Old Town. Set on the Vilnia river and with its historic centre awash with beautiful buildings and cobblestone streets, Vilnius has a wonderful ambience. In the afternoon we transfer to Trakai, the former capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, where our first cycle tour starts, on gentle hills around Galve lake. At Trakai you may visit (optional) the 14th Century island castle built on a small island in the lake. Return to Vilnius for overnight. Coach transfer: approx 55km/34mi

Meals:  B

After breakfast we transfer by minibus to Merkine, where we get on our bikes to ride to Druskininkai, one of the best climatic and wellness spring resorts in Europe. We'll cycle via Liškiava, famous for its 17-18th Century Dominican monastery complex on the banks of the Nemunas River. On arrival in Druskininkai, there's free time at the resort or you can take an optional loop a ride in the woods. Dinner at the hotel (included). We spend two nights here. Coach transfer: approx 100km/62.5mi

Meals:  B,D

In the morning we transfer to Dzukija National Park, the largest park in Lithuania. 90% of the park is covered with pine forests and it's one of 13 wild PAN parks in Europe. Here we'll cycle through the woods and ethnographical villages. In the afternoon we'll visit Grutas Park, which has a unique distinction of being the place where all unwanted statues of Lenin were taken after Lithuania regained its independence from the Soviet Union. Coach transfer: approx 55km/34mi

Meals:  B

This morning we transfer across the border to Poland. Once in Poland, we start cycling on rolling hills, enjoying picturesque views to beautiful lakes and the Polish countryside. Wigry National Park is our destination. En route we visit Suwalki, the largest town and the capital of the historical Suwalki region. Check into the hotel, our base for two nights. Dinner at the hotel (included). Coach transfer 85km/53mi

Meals:  B,D

Today we'll enjoy a loop ride on marked trails around Wigry Lake, the largest (with 15 islands), one of the deepest (73m) and most beautiful lakes in the Podlaskie Voivodeship region. En route we'll explore a former monastery, built by the Camaldolese monks in the 17th Century. The complex, complete with a church and 17 hermitages, is spectacularly located on a peninsula in the lake. Later we'll ride back to the hotel.

After breakfast, a short transfer takes us to Augustow, a small but appealing town that's the gateway to the Suwalki region at the Netta River. Today we cycle along the 'Green Velo' (cycle path) to Biebrza National Park, which protects vast and relatively untouched fenlands. Its forests and marshes support a unique variety of plants, wetland birds including eagle-owls and cranes, and mammals such as elk and beavers.
