Trip highlights

  • Stress free cycling on mostly dedicated cycle ways through northern Zealand, ideal for families
  • Relaxing at Bellevue beach on the outskirts of Copenhagen
  • Exploring castles and cathedrals and appreciating the regions rich maritime history
  • Feasting on fresh seafood including smoked fish

Historically, Zealand was the playground of Danish royalty and even the Vikings. It's easy to see why. Denmark's largest island offers an abundance of beautiful beaches, thick forests and magnificent coastal panoramas which today makes it equally attractive for local Danes. This self guided cycling exploration of the island will take you from the nation's capital on an anticlockwise exploration of northern Zealand's stunning natural landscapes as well as the many Stone Age and Viking relics that are scattered across the peninsula. Experience a medieval market square and Kronborg Castle, known as Hamlets Elsinore, relax on famous Bellevue Beach with its Arne Jacobsen designed lifeguard towers on Copenhagen's northern outskirts. Try freshly smoked fish from a smokehouse, delight in the largest Renaissance residence in Scandinavia, Frederiksborg Castle, visit the World Heritage listed Roskilde with its Viking museum and marvel at the cathedral where the tombs of Danish royalty are preserved. The options are many and you can experience them as you wish on this Danish self guided cycle adventure, ideal for families.

Traveller Rating

Whether you begin your tour strolling through town to the old harbour with its Little Mermaid, taking a canal boat trip, visiting design and antique shops or enjoying a drink and dinner at Nyhavn, the charm of Denmark’s capital will put you in the mood for the coming days. Most places of interest are easily accessible on foot, by bus or by bike in Copenhagen and it is definitely worth staying longer in this beautiful city, either before or after your cycle trip. You will find your rental bikes already stored in the hotel.

Meals:  Nil

From Copenhagen you head north on mostly dedicated cycle ways along the Öresund, the strait between Zealand in Denmark and Schonen in Sweden. As you pedal you will always have a view of Baltic Sea. Along the way you reach the famous beach Bellevue, in Copenhagen's northern limits. Here you can stop for a refreshing dip in the cool waters before continuing to Helsingør and your hotel. In Helsingør you can visit Kronborg Castle, considered the inspiration for Elsinore, home of Shakespeare's Hamlet, or take a 20 minute ferry to Helsingborg in Sweden, interesting for its medieval centre and the Kärnan tower.

Meals:  B

Take some time to visit the old port city of Helsingør before continuing your bike ride. The coastal resorts of Hornbæk and Gilleleje will charm you and offer a great location for a mid-morning coffee. Later the route takes you away from the coast and past extensive nature reserves and small lakes en route to Helsinge or Hillerød. In Hillerød you can visit Frederiksborg Castle, based around a lake and baroque gardens, which is considered the largest Renaissance palace in Scandinavia.

Meals:  B

Today you cycle along a coastal route that takes you past the small idyllic villages of Tisvildeleje and Liseleje as well as numerous beaches to reach your destination, Højby. The town is located on the opposite side of the Isefjord. The ferry ticket to cross to Rørvig is included in the trip cost. Today you can choose between 2 options. One variant takes you back to the coast, where the small idyllic villages Tisvildeleje and Liseleje as well as numerous beaches exude their charm. Another route can take you inland via city of Frederiksværk to today's destination - Hundested or Højby. The latter is located on the opposite side of the Isefjord. The ferry ticket to Rørvig is included.

Meals:  B

Cycling along the Odsherred peninsula you will always be close to the sea, dunes and salty air as you cycle past numerous beaches. Enjoy the breathtaking views all along the coast of Isefjord, Lammefjord and Holbækfjord. Today's destination is the port city of Holbæk, first mentioned in 1199. Here we recommend visiting the Protestant-Lutheran Church of St Nikolai.

Meals:  B

Today you will start south along the Isefjord, discovering green meadows and small charming villages. The last part leads along the bay of Roskilde, before the Cathedral of Roskilde welcomes you from afar. Since the early 15th century many Danish royal family members have been buried here and it is a UNESCO World Heritage listed site. A visit to the Viking Ship Museum is also recommended. Overnight in or near Roskilde.

Meals:  B

Today you will head back to the starting point of your tour, the Danish capital Copenhagen. From Albertslund you have access to the high-speed cycle route number C99, which leads you almost without traffic into the city center. In the afternoon there is enough time for you to explore the city on your own.

Meals:  B

The trip concludes after breakfast. We can assist with booking extra nights for you to explore the Danish capital, please ask for our rates.
