Trip highlights

  • Winter sunshine
  • Late winter/early spring flowers
  • Good views

Cyprus is an island of natural beauty in a region with an abundance of ancient and modern civilisations and cultures. Its mineral wealth was well known in ancient times: the island gave its name to the element copper (Cu). Away from the cosmopolitan towns and beach resorts you will find large areas of natural, unspoilt countryside. Woodland, orchards and vineyards are interspersed with tranquil, timeless villages. The people extend a warm and friendly welcome and their hospitality will add greatly to the enjoyment of your tour. Winter in Cyprus is generally mild, especially the western part where our walks are concentrated. The walks are mostly in the Akamas Peninsula, an area soon to be declared a nature reserve, and also in the adjacent “Laona” plateau area, at 600m, with its small traditional villages. On several days the walks will end at the coast. In late winter and early spring, from February onwards, peaking in March, the Akamas blooms with a profusion of wild flowers.

Transfer to Drouseia on the edge of the Akamas Peninsula, on the Laona plateau. This small village has a population of 200. It is a typical Cypriot village with many old stone houses bearing traditional architecture of carved doors and windows of wood. The narrow, winding streets add to the character of the village along with the renovated village houses. There are two coffee shops that cater to the needs of the village, as well as two small supermarkets/kiosks and some good tavernas, normally open on weekends in winter. There is a small weaving museum and an open air theatre which hosts events during the summer months. The church of Agios Epifanios, is in the centre of the village and you can explore the ancient monastery of Agios Georgios Nikoxilitis on the eastern side. This monastery is thought to have been built in the 15th century and was rebuilt in 1923 after destruction by fire. From Drouseia you can see all the way across to the Troodos Mountains and, looking north you can see Chrysochou Bay, the town of Polis and Latchi harbour. Looking west, there are stunning views of the Akamas Peninsula with many huge landforms scattered in between. Accommodation: The Palates Hotel offers accommodation for 2 nights. It is a comfortable family run hotel. All rooms are ensuite.

Meals:  D

A gentle introduction to the Laona landscape and tracks which criss cross the area. After passing through Drouseia village, the path passes a wayside chapel before dropping down to the villages of KritouTerra followed by a steep climb back up to Drouseia.

Meals:  B,D

A long walk, mostly downhill, passing through a deserted village before meandering along tracks and through woods, then descending steeply to the coast. You walk down to the Baths of Aphrodite where the lovely goddess is said to have bathed in a rock pool. Good views of Chrysochou Bay throughout. Accommodation: Two nights at Chrysochou Bay, Akamas Peninsula. The modern looking hotel is set in a fine position, just above a pebble beach. All rooms are ensuite. The Baths of Aphrodite are located 1.5 km /1 mile away. 4 km /2.5 miles is Latchi harbour where all facilities are available. A further 2 km from here and you reach Polis, a small town, but the area's largest!

Meals:  B,D

There are a couple of walking options circulating from the Baths of Aphrodite and onto the the Akamas Peninsula with a varied scenery including spectacular views from Mouti tis Sotiras looking down towards the western tip of Cyprus. The day involves tranquil views of the sea and walking on nature trails.

Meals:  B,D

After a short transfer (included) to Drouseia, walk to Kato Akourdaleia through the rugged terrain of the Laona region, passing the tiny Byzantine church of Agia Paraskevi and view points over the Klavaris Gorge. There is an option to extend the walk 3km or so to the higher village of Pano Akourdaleia which may have a coffee shop open. Accommodation: Two nights Kato Akourdaleia. In the centre of this tiny village, set among orange groves, you stay in a traditional old building now converted into an attractive, family-run inn with 7 en-suite rooms. On occasion rooms in the nearby villa and in the village are used.

Meals:  B,D

Circular walk around Kato Akourdaleia via the tiny village of Miliou which then descends into valleys before climbing steeply to the deserted village of Theletra. The return journey, much along tracks at a higher altitude, has breathtaking views across terraced hillsides to the Troodos Mountains in the far distance.

Meals:  B,D

Today there is an included transfer to Pano Arodes a village high up amongst fields and vine plantations, the walk is mostly downhill towards the west coast, passing between gorges and pleasant wooded areas with good views throughout. Towards the end of the walk there is an opportunity to visit the entrance of the spectacular Avakas Gorge, adding a little to your walk. Entering the gorge itself as it narrows however is dangerous, mainly due to rock-fall. Agios Georgios tis Pegeias situated about 400m from the coast, with a small fishing harbour and beach area. It is mainly an agricultural area with bananas and citrus, a taverna, two churches and the ruins of an early Christian basilica. It is locally claimed, that the sunset from Agios Georgios tis Pegeias is the most beautiful on the island. Perhaps the best place to be to view this spectacle is above the cliff next to the St. Georges Restaurant above the fishing harbour or on the coast itself. Accommodation: Agios Georgios tis Pegeias. A small family run 1 star hotel. All rooms are ensuite.

Meals:  B,D

After breakfast, transfer from Agios Georgios tis Pegeias to the airport.
