Trip highlights

  • Discovering Dubrovnik Old town on foot
  • Experiencing the landscapes and traditions of the Konavle region
  • Exploring the Islands of Mljet and Šipan
  • Soaking up the warm hospitality of your hosts in charming guesthouses
  • Delighting in fresh local produce

With its dramatic coastal position and stone walls encircling the terracotta roofs of the old town, it is no wonder that Dubrovnik is known as the Pearl of the Adriatic. Discovering this enchanting city and its surrounding islands on foot is the essence of this self guided walking holiday. From the outlying region of Konavle, where the summer houses of Dubrovnik's elite were built amongst vineyards, olive groves and mountains, walk through a countryside with endearing traditions. A short ferry ride takes you to the island of Šipan, where forested trails connect pretty villages and hidden coves, perfect for a swim break. Spend two nights on the island of Mljet and explore its salted lakes and national park on foot and sample its excellent wines, goat's cheese and olive oil from the comfort of your charming guesthouse accommodation.

On arrival at the airport, a short transfer will take you to your accommodation in the Konavle valley, where you'll meet our representative.

Meals:  D

Today's loop walk starts from the village of Radovcici and takes you to the seaside, where you can visit the beautiful Pasjaca beach. The walking track leads from the seaside towards the villages of Cilipi and Komaji and back to Radovcici. Overnight in Konavle. Walk: 18km/11.25mi. Ascent: 550m/1800ft

After breakfast take a transfer to Gruz port to catch a boat across to Lopud Island, a crossing of just under an hour. Nowadays Lopud is a charming and relatively quiet place with lovely beaches and no cars or traffic, home to a permanent population of under 300 people. In the past however, Lopud was a very important port, with great strategic importance - in the 17th century it is said to have had a population of 14,000 people, mostly involved in seafaring. Formally part of the Republic of Dubrovnik, from the 18th to the early 20th centuries, the French, English and Austrians took turns controlling this strategically located little island. Nowadays there are reminders of the island's more momentous maritime past with the atmospheric ruins of a fortress and palace, churches dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries and a restored Franciscan monastery. You will have the day to walk around the island and enjoy its beaches before returning to Dubrovnik in the afternoon. Walk 9.5km/6mi +316 m / -316 m, +1036 ft / -1036 ft

Meals:  B

In the morning you will transfer (included) to the port of Dubrovnik to take a boat to the island of Šipan, the largest of the Elafiti islands. The boat will arrive at the town of Sudjuradj, from where you will start walking towards the small town of Šipanska Luka. These two larger settlements are connected by a road that cuts across the fertile fields of Sipan. During the 15th century, many aristocratic Dubrovnik families built summer manors on Šipan. The summer manor of the Sorkocevic family stands out in Sipanska Luka. In Šipanska Luka you can try some local dishes and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Later in the afternoon, return to the port of Sudjuradj where the boat departs to Dubrovnik. Overnight in Dubrovnik. Walk: 14km/8.75mi. Ascent: 150m/492ft

Meals:  B

The island of Mljet is one of Croatia's 8 national parks. The 'green island' is well known for its untouched nature, olive groves, vineyards and rich forests with their rich flora and fauna. It's a peaceful place to enjoy the pristine beauty of the natural surroundings. You arrive on Mjlet by boat from Dubrovnik and start walking from the town of Polace towards Montokuc, with magnificent views of the island. From Montokuc you descend towards the village of Seline, on one of the lakes. You can have a swim here before heading back to Polace, Mjlet, where you stay tonight. *For departures in April, May and October there is only an afternoon ferry so you will complete this walk along with the lakes walk the following day. Walk: 9.5km/6mi +290m/-290m, +951 ft /-951 ft

Meals:  B

Mljet National Park makes up most of the island and there are several villages and two salt water lakes - Veliko and Malo Jezero - and a lovely Benedictine monastery on the island of Sv. Marija (St Mary). Today you can walk around the islands and enjoy a leisurely day. For lunch you can go to the small restaurant on St Mary. Overnight Mljet. Walk: 15km/9.5mi. Ascent: 300m/985ft

Meals:  B

Today you go to the Pearl of the Adriatic - Dubrovnik. After breakfast you will transfer (included) towards the centre of Dubrovnik. Here you will meet your local expert for a guided walking tour of Dubrovnik's old town (2hrs) and explore this stunning UNESCO World Heritage centre. After the tour you can enjoy some free time before making your own way to your hotel.
