Watch: Via Francigena, the Italian Camino

You know the Camino de Santiago.

An 800km historic trail in Spain that’s been walked by pilgrims since the 9th century.

The scenery.

The friends.

The cuisine.

The triumphs.

The memories.

The overwhelming sense of achievement.

Now imagine all that...in Italy.

Don’t be surprised if you were unaware of the Italian Camino (although it’s been around since the Middle Ages). It’s an ancient route that runs through England, France, Switzerland, and Italy to Rome. The Via Francigena has experienced a recent revival and is now one of the most exciting pilgrimage trails in Europe.

It gets far fewer pilgrims than the more famous Spanish walks, however, the word is quickly spreading about just how good it is. Even if you’ve been to Italy before, walking along the Via Francigena gives you a new perspective; the time to soak up the spectacular views, pass through charming Tuscan villages and dine on authentic Italian cuisine.

As UTracks has done for the other Camino routes in Europe, you can choose which segment of the Via Francigena you’d like to experience. There are guided walks showcasing the Best of the Via Francigena and a Food Lover’s tour. There are self-guided cycling trips and walking trips that range from the Great St Bernard Pass in Switzerland all the way to the final certifiable stretch from Orvieto to Rome. If you have the time you can even do the whole thing.

Watch UTracks traveller Tim Charody's inspiring journey in Italy and discover how UTracks lets you explore the Via Francigena Camino your way.
