Located in the south of Germany, and bordering the Czech Republic, Austria and Liechtenstein, Bavaria has everything that you as an active traveller could ask for. Spectacular alpine scenery, beautiful countryside filled with traditional architecture, fairytale castles, history soaked cities such as Nuremberg and Munich and some of Germany’s best food, wine, and of course beer. Germany has excellent infrastructure that encourages cycling. With a network of safe cycling paths, and also a host of bicycle friendly accommodations, it’s an ideal destination if you're considering trying a self guided cycle trip for the first time. You can choose to cycle from the Bavarian capital, Munich, through the delightful rural landscapes of southern Bavaria before crossing the border to the Austrian cities of Salzburg or Innsbruck; head to upper Bavaria which borders Lake Constance, a classic destination for many cyclists; or try one of the popular themed trails, such as the Bavarian Beer Trail.

 

   

Despite the name, and the fact that there are the highest concentration of breweries here than anywhere else in the world, the Bavarian Beer Trail connects three exciting Franconian medieval cities; Rothenberg, Nuremberg and Bamberg. They offer some intriguing side-trips if you're interested in history. For beer lovers, the beer is second to none thanks to the German Beer Purity Law (reinheitsgebot). It is the oldest food regulation in the world and means you'll only find hops, malt, yeast and water in your amber nectar - nothing else. For walkers, the Bavarian Alps (known locally as Bayerische Alpen) offer some of the best walking in Europe which are literally fit for a king. Hike along King Ludwig’s Way to the castle that inspired Disney, Neuschwanstein, or explore the dramatic scenery of one of Germany’s favourite outdoor playgrounds, Berchtesgaden National Park, home to the pristine fjord like Lake Königssee (which translates to King’s Lake) at the foot of the Bavarian Alps.

   

The spring and summer is the best time to visit but if you happen to get the chance to visit Germany during winter make sure it’s around Christmas so you can visit the legendary Christkindlmarkets, Nuremberg being our favourite.
