Blog home / Via Francigena: On The Way to Rome in The Holy Year

In the Holy Year of Pilgrim, declared by Pope Francis, walk one of the most exciting pilgrimage trails in Europe. On a fully supported self guided walk, in 10 days, it is possible to cover the last stretch of the Via Francigena from Orvieto to St Peter’s Cathedral in the Vatican in Rome. Via Francigena, the ‘Road from France’, is one of the most exciting pilgrimage trails in Europe today. This is the route pilgrims originally travelled in the 11
th century, from Canterbury in England to Rome, where the martyrdom of St Peter and St Paul was. The last part of this 1900 km journey is in Italy and starts at the St Bernard Pass in the Alps on the border with Switzerland.

UTracks is one of the first travel companies to offer this full Italian route as a supported self-guided walk. If you ever wanted to do the entire trail “in one go” it would take almost two months. Because you can depart on this trip any day you like, you have the freedom and flexibility to make it into your personal achievement. Alternatively, if you have limited time to take off, we have divided the trail in eight sections varying from 5 to 10 days each. The
final section of the Francigena Way pilgrimage, going from Orvieto in Umbria through the region of Lazio and ending at the Vatican in Rome, is in our Top 6 most popular trips for this season.
