Did you know? When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, thousands of Japanese TV viewers donated money to the people of Berlin. This was used to plant cherry trees along the line where the wall once stood. The Times writer Lizzy Enfield used this spot along the Berlin Wall for a picnic break in spring 2019 when she was cycling the Wall Trail with us. 
 
The trail is also known as the Mauerweg and is a 160km loop that follows the former border line between East and West Berlin. It is marked with many historical sites of interest that make ideal breaks from your cycling. In her article (it may be behind a paywall) Lizzy describes the concentration camps, watchtowers, former border crossings and more. 
 
Just wanted to say how much we enjoyed this trip. It was both great and scenic cycling and utterly fascinating, both to appreciate the size and scale of the wall and see a lot of the history in situ but also to see Greater Berlin. I had not appreciated before quite what a green and beautiful city it is.
