Duolingo

Possibly the world's favourite language app, Duolingo has 100 million users and counting. Perhaps what's so addictive about the Duolingo app is how they gamify learning - each simple lesson you complete you are rewarded with points and can easily visualise your budding skills and language progression.

Duolingo is available in almost 40 languages, including European tongues such as Romanian, Danish, Scottish Gaelic, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, French and German. There are also 'fun' languages like Klingon and Esperanto to try as well.

Studies have shown that every 34 hours spent on the Duolingo app is equal to 1 university semester of language courses. Download the app for free on your phone, or click here for more information.

HelloTalk

HelloTalk is probably better for more advanced language learners. It's a free app that connects you with real, live people who are native speakers of the language you want to learn. You then chat with them on your phone and the app helps with correcting your sentences and providing translation skills.

Not only are you learning valuable language skills but you're gaining cultural insights you couldn't possibly get from a textbook.

There are over 100 languages to practice and you can choose to text, phone call, Facetime or even draw to one another. It's the next best thing to actually having a face to face conversation. Check it out now.
