Sweden: Island Hopping Walk

Sweden's picturesque capital spreads out across 14 islands, each providing a different perspective of the city. Not too far southwest of Stockholm lies Sörmland, often described as Sweden's southernmost wilderness, known for its pine forests, open green fields and vast lakes.

Hiking through nature reserves and charming villages is the perfect start to this trip, which then takes you to Stockholm's southern archipelago with its more than 24,000 islands stretching 80km east of Stockholm into the Baltic Sea.

With a relaxed pace there is ample time to swim in the refreshing Baltic waters, hike trails in manor house grounds and visit towns of pretty wooden houses. The handpicked accommodation is a real highlight ranging from a spa hotel to historic cabins, a guesthouse and well located city hotels.

On this specially designed family itinerary, the activities begin in Stockholm with a ride through this super cycle friendly city, to the Ecopark, the world’s first national park to be located within a city. Leaving the city by steamboat is one of the many highlights as you journey across calm Lake Mälaren to Mariefred with its impressive Gripsholm's Castle.

Swapping your bikes for canoes you travel through dramatic and varied scenery of the Marviken lake system and camp in a delightful lakeside setting. Lacing up your hiking boots the journey continues on foot through the forests and wilderness enroute to Gnesta where you stay in a beautifully located farmhouse with wonderful views across the lake. A final stretch by bike takes you past the royal Tullgarn Palace to the seaside town of Trosa on the Baltic Sea with its pretty wooden houses.
