"Cycling through South West France on quiet country roads, canal paths and rail trails was unforgettable. French drivers are enormously respectful of cyclists making the riding feel extra safe. 

 

The route took in everything that is expected of this part of France, historic monuments and ruins, stone farm buildings, wild forests, well-tended farms and potagers, elegant chateaux, vineyards and great food. 

 

 

Our first morning took in the Chateau de Biron perched impressively on a hill overlooking the valley and village below. I love the French approach to preserving their heritage. Always enough information and the right degree of conservation makes visiting such a great experience. 

 

 

One morning I had gone ahead of the peloton and was cruising the empty country roads. Looking to a small field cut into the forest beside the road I saw a large red coloured deer gazing silently at me in the early morning light. On other occasions, I stopped to photograph a family potager of ripening tomatoes, rows of leeks and crisp lettuce. Being able to travel at my own pace made this possible. 

 

 

One of the highlights was an unexpected original Rembrandt painting in a church in a small village that we found on a minor detour for coffee. (The still warm croissants with the coffee were also a highlight). 

 

Because it covered so much ground this is great trip to research places where you might like to return and spend more time. As a result of this tour I have booked a return trip for 2023 to stay at a rural property in the Perigord region. 

 

 

No special gear was needed for riding the e-bikes. Just comfortable clothing and flat shoes. I would however recommend gloves and warm vest for the early mornings in September.

 

I would recommend this tour to anyone who is active and adventurous with moderate fitness and good mobility. Electric bikes mean age is no barrier!!"
