Interview: Suzanne's Danube Bike & Barge Experience

Is there a better holiday than cycling along the Danube's edge in Europe, a gentle breeze blowing in your hair, taking coffee breaks in quaint Austrian towns and exploring the Hungarian countryside? Then, at night, settling into your comfortable cabin as your barge slowly cruises downstream?

After reading Suzanne's Traveller Tale about her time on the Danube Explorer to Budapest, we can't think of a better travel experience!

Why did you choose the Danube Explorer to Budapest: Bike & Barge trip?

Recommended by some friends and it seemed to be a very active trip which it really was, just what we were looking for.

How did you prepare for your trip?

I personally did some extra km’s on my bike but my husband is a cyclist and did not need any preparation.

What was the overall trip highlight?

Cycling through small towns along the Danube - sensational! 😄

What was your favourite town?

I loved Durnstein and the country towns of Hungary - amazing.

What was the scenery you cycled through like? Were there any standout views, mountains, flowers, lakes or wildlife?

Everything was brilliant from the castles along the Danube to the homes situated there too, the beautiful small towns, quaint houses, horses and farm animals. I also loved the flowers in season and the mountain views in different areas - spectacular.

What was the local cuisine like? Can you describe your favourite food and drink?

We mostly ate on the MS Vivienne which was lovely and they provided local cuisine which was also spectacular. We did eat at local cafes along the bike routes and a favourite morning tea for me was coffee and Churros and my husband opted for the local fish which he said was amazing.

How challenging did you find the trail?

Easy peasey - I rode my e-bike while my husband rode a regular bike.

What surprised you the most about your trip?

How much we LOVED every minute of it, so organised, friendly, loved sleeping whilst the boat travelled (never slept better), fabulous activities manager, Leslie, was there at any time and very approachable. EVERYTHING was unforgettable.

Can you share advice for other travellers thinking about doing your trip?

Have a fairly good level of fitness especially riding, get your ‘bum’ ready for the saddle or you will be disappointed and sore.

Anything else to share?

Yes | We would love to do another trip like this again, obviously travelling a different route but definitely an active cycle trip with the freedom given is absolutely fantastic.
