The Dolomites or Mont Blanc? A walkers dilemma

Dolomites or Mont Blanc? Which one should you walk?!

Walking in the DolomitesThe Dolomites are picture postcard perfect It’s inevitable. As soon as you see a picture of the Dolomites you instantly think, “Wow, I must go there next!” But then you recall the conversation with your friends, an article you saw, or your own research which all wax lyrical about the wonders of the Mont Blanc region, and how a walk around the highest mountain in the Alps takes you through France, Switzerland AND Italy and all the amazing things there are to experience along the way. So, which is it this year? The Dolomites or Mont Blanc? Let’s start with the similarities – the grading of the walks and the accommodation styles. If you have walked either one, you should be fine to walk in the other. There are of course harder walks for serious hikers and more family friendly trails for those who like to ramble or bring the kids. If you were happy with the accommodation, you won’t be disappointed with either region as mountain huts are fairly similar in nature across both the Mont Blanc region and the Dolomites, however the refugios are a little smaller in the Dolomites region. When it comes to the scenery it isn’t ‘same, same but different’ at all. The Dolomites are stark - and very dramatic. The mood of the place changes with the light and weather which keeps you mesmerised as you walk during the day. They aren’t blessed by the green Swiss villages or snow capped peaks that draw people to the Mont Blanc trails. And there is no ‘highest’, ‘longest’, or significant fact about the Dolomites to attract list tickers, so you should find less people on the trails in the Dolomites. Dolomites floraThe Dolomites flora are yet another reason to walk in the Dolomites To contrast the starkness of the Dolomites are the beautiful, and rare, alpine and meadow flowers. Thanks to its geological make-up, the Dolomites produce an explosion of colourful flora that is considered amongst the most beautiful in the entire Alps. If you love plants, consider the Dolomites in June or July. Depending on your love for either France or Italy’s culture or food, this may also determine your decision. The Mont Blanc region walks typically start in the Chamonix Valley, which is easy access from Geneva and not too difficult to get to other regions of France by train. The Dolomites, well you can extend your walking holiday with a side-trip to Venice (only 2 to 3 hours away from Cortina). Dolomites tunnelsThe WWI history in the Dolomites adds an extra dimension to your walk For history buffs, the Dolomites should be the obvious choice. The various UNESCO listed tunnels and WWI history that you will see and touch along the walk adds a further dimension to a walking tour. Learn more about why the Dolomites were UNESCO listed here. Everyone is different, that’s why we have so many variations on our walking routes through both the Dolomites and Mont Blanc regions.
