Belgium's Top Self Guided Bike Tours

Enjoy a cycling trip throughout the magical country of Belgium. On a self-guided bike holiday in Belgium you can freely explore the many picturesque villages and gourmet foods that inhabit this nation.

While many prefer to experience the Low Countries of the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg on a bike and barge tour (see here for 4 great bike and barge tours in Belgium), the below section of trips are all hotel-based which allows you the complete freedom to determine your own schedule and to discover the local nightlife and restaurants.

If you want to explore Belgium (and beyond), here are eight of our top self-guided cycling holidays that are hotel-based.

Belgium Cycle: Brussels to Bruges

The city of Antwerp in the evening | Richard Tulloch

During this week-long cycle holiday, follow the Flemish Masters to the most beautiful towns in Belgium and admire their artworks in the Old Masters Museum in Brussels, St. Bavo Cathedral in Ghent, KMKSA and Rubens House in Antwerp, St. John’s Church in Mechelen and Groeninge Museum in Bruges.

In between towns, there will be ample opportunity to explore the special pockets of this enchanting country. Much of the mainly flat route is alongside a river, past fields and through woods. At the end of the cycling day, stay in comfortable hotels and explore charming cities where local specialities such as beer, mussels and chocolate are waiting to be sampled.

Amsterdam to Brussels by Bike

Discover the beautiful medieval architecture of Ghent | Milo Profi

The Netherlands and Belgium are two of the most bicycle-friendly countries in the world and this new trip follows a well-signposted route along a string of exceptional Dutch and Flemish towns. While in Holland, discover the hidden gem of Bergen op Zoom, whose 800-year history is etched in its narrow streets and old squares, and once you cross over to Belgium, see for yourself why Antwerp remains one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. The final leg to Brussels is short to ensure plenty of time to explore the Belgian capital’s main sights, such as the opulent Grote Markt.

There's also the Amsterdam to Bruges cycling tour that follows a similar route but ends in the fairytale town of Bruges. Bruges is a place guaranteed to delight all visitors. If you prefer, you can also experience the reverse itinerary.

Belgium Beer Cycle

Brussels main square during a beer festival | Milo Profi

Discover quaint towns as you learn about the origins of Belgium’s best beers: brewing traditions in the country date back to the Middle Ages and are still in use today, with abbey-dwelling monks still producing some of the world’s most refreshing and flavoursome brews. This new self-guided cycling itinerary showcases Belgium's beautiful countryside and endearing villages with a focus on local breweries and traditional beer practices, including a visit to Europe’s largest beer brewery museum and sampling ‘Trappist beer’.

Cycle the Western Front

Cycling the Western Front

From Amiens to Ypres, this reflective cycle journey takes you through an area steeped in history: the battlefields of the Somme are the final resting place of many thousands of soldiers. Follow quiet paths along the Western Front, a series of trenches built by the Germans, stretching over 400 miles from the Atlantic coast to the Swiss border.

Gain a deeper understanding of the region’s war history as you explore preserved historic battle sites and mine craters, visit the local museums and commemorative memorials and stop at some of the over 250 dedicated military cemeteries.

Five Countries Cycle

Cycling in the Flemish countryside | Hilary Delbridge

Cycle your own mini ‘Tour de Europe’ over 10 days on this new ride through five countries – The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Germany. The trip follows the entire International Meuse Route, a 125-mile bike path along the meandering Meuse River between the historic town of Maastricht (the birthplace of the euro currency but also where the Treaty on European Union was signed) and Sedan in France, home to Europe’s largest castle. Leaving the Meuse Route behind, you will connect with the 75-mile Vennbahn Rail Trail, one of Europe’s longest converted rail trails.

Have you travelled to Belgium before? It's a worthy country to add to your 'must do' cycling list!
