Trip highlights

  • Discover the mountain trails high above Lake Como
  • Experience the rich culture and art of the region including lavish villas and gardens
  • Explore Menaggio, a beautiful town with fabulous views of the lake
  • Soak up the atmosphere in your lakeside hotel

Straddling Lombardy and Piedmont, the great lakes of northern Italy have been a popular holiday destination since Roman times, evidenced by the array of lavish villas and sumptuous gardens which line the shores. Away from the affluent holiday centres is a feast of walking trails exploring the forested valleys, mountain tops and traditional villages which have retained their unique character. The old tracks which cross the mountains on the west side of Lake Como, used even today by the local people to reach the alpine pastures called 'Monti' ('Munt' in the local dialect) have been transformed into a series of waymarked trails offering exceptional views. This program takes in the highlights of Lake Como within a flexible framework with a selection of walks of varying lengths and difficulty to choose from along the Monti Lariani (Lario being the ancient name of Lake Como). With accommodation in a small family run hotel there is ample opportunity to experience the excellent regional cuisine allowing a complete appreciation of the area.

On arrival at the delightful town of Menaggio on the shores of Lake Como, make your way to the hotel. The remainder of the day is free to explore the town and take in the views of the rugged mountains across the lake. Over the following days, you can explore the small towns, viewpoints and forests on either side of Lake Como as well as the beautiful gardens of Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo and Villa Melzi in Bellagio, enjoying walks of differing lengths and difficulty around Monti Lariani (Lario being the ancient name of Lake Como).

Meals:  Nil

Start the trip with an easy lake-side warm up walk. After breakfast, take the boat that crosses the lake to Varenna. Following the east side of the lake, take the 'Sentiero del Viandante' (the Wayfarer's Path) and experience a rich and ancient cultural landscape with traditional architecture and outstanding views of Lake Como and its surrounding mountains. Just above Varenna, make a short detour to visit the castle in Vezio - it's worth it! Return to Menaggio by boat. Ascent 620m/2034ft, descent 600m/1969ft

Meals:  B

A morning private transfer takes you to the hill top village of Cavargna from where a spectacular climb takes you to the Church of Saint Lucio, right on the border between Italy and Switzerland. A superbly panoramic footpath leads you through woods and meadows 1550m down to Porlezza, situated at the northeast end of Lake Lugano and very close to the border. This rural farmland and forest walk with imposing views is one of the area’s highlights. Return to Menaggio by public bus. Ascent 528m/1732ft, descent 1319m/4327ft

Meals:  B

There is a choice of walks today: - A loop walk from Menaggio through the Val Sanagra Nature Reserve, rich in historical and cultural traces via hamlets of Loveno, Pianuro and Barna (15.5km, 5hrs, ascent 695, descent 695). - Walk to Rezzonico on the Antica Strada Regina, a Roman road along the west coast of Lake Como that linked the Po valley with countries north of the Alps and was used until the end of the 18th century when the current road was built. From the top of the hill, there are great views of the lake and surrounding mountains (9km/5.6mi, 3hrs, ascent 331m/1086ft, descent 325m/1066ft)

Meals:  B

Trip concludes after breakfast.

Grading

introductory to moderate

INTRODUCTORY TO MODERATE – GRADE 2 This is a self guided walk with average daily stages of 3-5 hours, with routes chosen dependent on your ability. The daily walks are centre based in or near Menaggio. The trip is graded introductory to moderate as although the paths are well defined and clearly marked there are some sections of the trail which are rough and exposed. There are many ups and downs as you would expect in a mountainous region, and walking poles are definitely a good idea. A reasonable level of fitness is required. As with all of our trips it is important that you are well prepared. We suggest that you undertake regular exercise – swimming, cycling, and jogging, two to three times a week for three months prior to your departure. This is suitable for all ages including active children (aged 8 and above).
