Trip highlights

  • The Grisons with its alpine views
  • Leisurely ride in an amazing landscape of Lake Constance against the backdrop of the Alps
  • Cycling across borders in Switzerland, Austria and Germany
  • Viewing the Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen
  • Soaking up the fine hospitality of small family run hotels

Trace the flow of the Rhine by bike on this epic journey from the Swiss Alps to Basel, where the Rhine takes a sharp right on its journey to the North Sea. The relaxed itinerary offers the flexibility to explore the gorges of the Grisons on foot, cycle to wine-growers' villages to sample the local specialties, visit the Museum of Art in Liechtenstein, climb to a castle for a picture postcard view, and enjoy a boat ride at Europe's largest waterfall. The Grisons, or Graubunden as it is referred to by the Swiss, is considered by many to be Switzerland's most beautiful region, with its multitude of lakes, valleys and snow-capped mountain peaks. The Rhine River has its source here, connecting the mountains to Lake Constance over 100km away. Travelling alongside the Rhine and Lake Constance, this diverse cycle adventure from Switzerland passes through Liechtenstein and Austria before reaching Lake Constance in Germany. It continues beyond the lake to the Rhine Falls, through picturesque towns and villages along the river to the town of Basel situated on the Swiss/French border.

Make your own arrival to Chur for check in at the first hotel. The history of Chur, Switzerland's oldest town, goes back over 11,000 years. Stroll along the meandering lanes and into Bärenloch (the Bear's Hole) in the old town. The quirky inner courtyards are an excellent example of medieval living and in one of the many pubs here, you can let the evening come to a pleasant close. The Romansch town of Disentis/Mustér can be visited from Chur - please ask our consultants for our extra night rate in Chur.

Meals:  Nil

Today you'll be out and about in three different countries: first, cycling along the Alpenrhein through Switzerland, on a pleasant route into the Principality of Liechtenstein. After about 25km you will have pedalled through the entire length of the country and arrive at the border to Austria. From here it's just a short cycle to Feldkirch, your overnight stop.

Meals:  B

You cycle along the Rhine for a while and then a rack-and-pinion train takes you up to Gais in Appenzell. Mountain pastures and cows characterize the pretty scenery on your way to St Gallen. The Abbey Church library is considered one of the most important historic libraries in the world. It is home to about 160,000 books, one of which is the oldest German book.

Meals:  B

Enjoy the downhill stretch to Lake Constance near Arbon. Following the banks of the lake almost all the way, you cycle through apple orchards and the small towns of Arbon and Romanshorn to Constance. This stretch is flat and easy unless the westerly wind is blowing. You will frequently pass places where you can go swimming and refresh yourself in the lovely cool waters of the lake.

Meals:  B

Following the shores of Lake Constance, you pedal to Stein am Rhein with its frescoed, medieval houses. Switching several times between Germany and Switzerland you reach the canton's capital, Schaffhausen. The town, whose citizens competed with each other in building gables on their houses, is overlooked by Munot fort.

Meals:  B

After breakfast, it's a short cycle ride to the Rhine Falls, one of Europe's biggest waterfalls. Here you can take a boat ride up to the mighty roar of the water (included*). The Rhine continues to accompanies you on your way to Waldshut-Tiengen, as you pass by Rheinau monastery and the little town of Kaiserstuhl. *Operating times of the boat trip to the Rock (subject to change): April and October: 11.00 - 17.00, May and September: 10.00 - 18.00, June-August: 09.30 - 18.30 - and approx every 10-15 minutes within these hours.

Meals:  B

You cycle further on downstream, via Laufenburg to Bad Säckingen, where you'll find Europe's longest wooden, roofed bridge. Have a stop here - there are two very special museums you can visit: the Müllmuseum (garbage museum) and a museum about the famous "Trumpeter from Bad Säckingen". Following the northern bank of the Rhine, you cycle on to Rheinfelden. To shorten the route you can board a train here (not included). Should you decide to continue by bike, a visit to the Roman fort Augusta Raurica is worthwhile.

Meals:  B

After breakfast the trip concludes. If you'd like to extend your stay in Basel, please ask for our rates.

Grading

introductory to moderate

During the 7 days of cycling the daily routes are between 45 and 70 kilometres/28 to 43.5 miles with opportunities to shorten most days. The first stage is moderately hilly in the Höri region, otherwise the route is mainly even along tarred cycle paths. The path runs partially along the lake shore and partially along lakeside roads. Sporadically there are short, unsealed sections. Around Friedrichshafen the cycle path runs parallel to the highway. The lake shore is mostly open to the public. In order to prepare for this trip you will need to be comfortable cycling for extended periods, sometimes with traffic around you (sometimes unavoidable going in to and leaving towns).
