Morocco: Winter ascent of Mt Toubkal (4167m)

Sitting on the southern edge of Europe, separated from the continent by the Strait of Gibraltar, is the Kingdom of Morocco. The Rif Mountains occupy the region bordering the Mediterranean and the Atlas Mountains run down the backbone of the country, from the south west to the north east.

The highest mountain in the Atlas Ranges is the 4167m Jebel Toubkal. In summer, you are able to trek to the summit without the use of technical equipment however in winter the mountain is covered in snow making the ascent much more difficult. The winter climb to the summit, which affords spectacular views over the Sahara Desert on a clear day, is only for the fit and hardy and should not be underestimated.
